Book Description

1994
In 1978, a small group of Manoa residents, many of whom had been born and raised in the valley, met, with the assistance of the Lyon Arboretum, to begin to tell the rich history of their home. Dividing topics among themselves, these amateur historians began to sift through archives, family records, attic boxes and libraries in search of documents, maps, photographs and old newspaper clippings that would help to tell the story of Manoa. The process was long and tedious, but rewarding. The tapes, photographs and documents gathered through their combined efforts have been donated to the Hawaiian-Pacific Collection of the Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii for the benefit of future researchers. An edited portion of that collection of materials is presented in this history. Filled with photos, stories, maps, remembrances, and images of famous homes and sites, this book is a treasure of the history of Manoa.

This review is from: Manoa : The Story of a Valley (Hardcover)
This book, Manoa, the Story of a Valley, probably doesn't mean a whole lot to the reader unless 1) you live or have lived in Manoa Valley, or 2) you know a place or a person featured in the book.

Manoa, the Story of a Valley, is a non-fictional account of the physical and cultural evolution of a valley mauka (inland) of Waikiki on the island of Oahu. Even one hundred years ago, it was very rural, full of taro fields and rock walls. Today, it is full of houses, but in a quiet, modest way. This book descibes the past and present of the place and its residents. Aunty Bea was one of those characters, and she was an island treasure. The book is subtitled "The Multicultural Heritage of a Honolulu Neighborhood." The stories come from a variety of perspectives. If you love Manoa, you will want to read this book.
