About the Fashion Fairy Tale Memoir Series

Each book in this inspired series by fashion writer Camilla Morton inventively reimagines one of our favorite “Once Upon a Time” stories, blending it with the real-life story of a famed fashion designer. Lushly illustrated by the designers themselves, these tales illuminate each iconic individual’s creative magic while celebrating his unique life and career. The result is an intriguing combination of whimsy and memoir.

In this contemporary twist on the tale of the Elves and the Shoemaker, Manolo Blahník’s delightful drawings evoke the past, envision the future, and, of course, evidence the indelible footprint he’s made on fashion history. His illustrations take us from the banana plantations of his childhood to his current reign at the top of high-fashion footwear design, while playfully hinting at all the adventures he’s had and friends he’s met along the way.

About the Author

Camilla Morton is a London-based fashion writer and the author of the international bestseller How to Walk in High Heels, which has been translated into twenty languages worldwide. She was the runway reporter for U.K. Vogue.com, covering all international and couture collections. Morton has collaborated with several designers and written for magazines, newspapers and blogs, including Time magazine's "Style and Design," SHOWStudio, the Wall Street Journal's "Off Duty" section, and Harper's Bazaar in both the U.S. and the U.K. This is her fifth book.

Diane von FUrstenberg arrived in New York in 1970 with a suitcase full of her iconic wrap dresses and changed the way women dressed. DVF has pioneered fashion and business, built and sold a cosmetics company and founded a publishing house, and she supports many philanthropic causes—especially for women and the environment. DVF returned from a hiatus to fashion in 1997, relaunching the signature wrap to international acclaim. In 2005 the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the following year named her as the Council President.

This series has a wonderful visual project so it is impossible to ignore it on the bookstore shelf. When you start to flipping thru the pages, it's impossible to do not fall in love with Manolo's illustrations - they are astonishing.
However, reading the book, in many occasions I felt that this thing of matching the tale & the memoir just didn't run as smoothly as it should be. It seemed to me that someone made a huge effort to put the two things together and in order to accomplish a "convincing" result she left behind the part of the "beauty" of the tale.
Every time the author switches from the tale to Manolo's life, I felt a small jolt; it was like someone forcing a round piece to fit into a square one.
The book is worth it if you like Manolo's illustrations as I do, but don't expect too much of the story.

Its a magical tale that shows how the mad world of fashion mixes so effortlessly with a well loved tale, and what else could Manolo do than inspire a happier ending for the Elves and the Shoemakers!
If you liked How to Walk in High Heels you will enjoy this little amuse bouche by Camilla Morton as its not just children that enjoy a happily ever after!
