I have long awaited this show to come out on tape. The actors and charaters make this show one of the best to every cross the Atlantic. It is a must see for everyone who enjoys British humor.

BEST British Comedy Show ever!!!!,

This review is from: To the Manor Born Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
To The Manor Born is a British comedy set in the late70's/early 80's in Somerset England. The Grantleigh Estate is owned by widow Audrey fforbes-Hamilton and due to mounting debts, she must sell her beloved manor house and grounds. Top national grocer, Richard DeVere purchases Grantleigh to use as a home/business location. Audrey decides to buy the nearby Grantleigh Manor Lodge and settle in for a more mundane and poorer lifestyle, and at the same time to keep an eye on Mr. DeVere. Petty, but often amusing arguments and romantic flirtation develope between the two. This tape acts as the introduction to the series and its comedic personas including Audrey's best friend Marjory Frobisher, Mrs. Polouvicka - Richard DeVere's mother, The Rector, Brabinger - the butler, Ned - the estate farmhand. Great Laughs and good story line. MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE SHOW!!!!!!!! END

One of the best (if not THE best) British sitcoms.,

This review is from: To the Manor Born Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We have long awatied the arrival of this show on video. Penelpoe Keith does a masterful job as Audrey, the aristocratic widow who is so steeped in her heritage that she cannot fully let go when her fortunes change. Peter Bowles plays the upstart De Vere who, much to her chagrin, is neither an aristocrat nor even English. Much of the comedy in this piece involves her sometimes unwelcomed efforts to train him in the responsibilities associated with ownership of the estate. My favorite line, which so clearly illustrates the chauvenism of her former station and contempt for things foreign, is when she tells him, "It's called 'noblesse oblige'. It's an English term. I wouldn't expect you to know it." As with all good British sitcoms, this one has a definite end, which I am assuming is included on volume 2 and which I would never divulge.
