5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it, she is a female Stephen King.
My name is Steve O'Kelley. I met Lisa at the book signing of "The Manse" in Fayetteville, NC in 1988 or 89 and I loved it more than any other book to date. I have also read the two after it. I would love to get others. The use of fingers as a horror tool is brilliant. I have been trying to get the bookstores in California to carry her books. I would like to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Well done first novel.
I did enjoy most of the book, but felt it could have been shorter. There were too many peripheral characters and couldn't help but see the influence of Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell, even Charles L. Grant. Not to say that Ms. Cantrell isn't a an original writer. I liked the overall twist on the haunted house theme. While most haunted house stories inevitably explain...

I have to say that this is porobably one of my favorite horror stories to date. My freshman year in highschool (2008-2009) we were given a book report to do. As long as it was appropriate, we could do any book we wanted. So, i asked my friend if I could borrow this one. Little did i know that it would give me nightmares, nor did i know that it would be the book that got me into horror novels.

The Manse is an old home whose origional owners gave permission to the town to use as the widely popular haunted house each halloween. However, little do they know that The Manse's bloody history has actually manifested itself into a real-life House of Horrors. There are so many twists to the home's history, and the author leaves you turning the page in anticipation of what horrific scenes lie ahead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well done first novel., May 10, 2010
This review is from: The Manse (Paperback)
I did enjoy most of the book, but felt it could have been shorter. There were too many peripheral characters and couldn't help but see the influence of Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell, even Charles L. Grant. Not to say that Ms. Cantrell isn't a an original writer. I liked the overall twist on the haunted house theme. While most haunted house stories inevitably explain the source of the terror, The Manse keeps you wanting, giving the impression that the evil could be as limitless as hell itself. The scenes in which the main characters came face to face with the evil within the Manse manifesting itself was, as another reviewer noted, creepy, and a much quicker pageturner than the exposition parts of the novel, which seemed to drudge along at times. As a first novel, it was excellent. I haven't read anymore of her work to date, but look forward to. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short, sharp fright.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good way to gear up for Hallowe'en., April 23, 2005
This review is from: The Manse (Paperback)
A group of friends put on a Haunted House exhibit each Halloween. Little do they know that the nig, creaky house that they use (The Manse) really is haunted. Predictable, but fun. Suitable for adolescents.

5.0 out of 5 stars No wonder it won the Award!, May 1, 2002
This review is from: The Manse (Paperback)
This was Lisa's best work. If you can get it, read it! The artwork on the cover is also the best I've ever seen, but then that's because it's Bob Eggleton's work!

I took a trip through the Manse and enjoyed it very much. Lisa is a good writer. I found the Manse chilling and wish she would write a sequel.
