Powerful but Easy to Control
Don't be fooled by the small, compact design of the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator. Though it weighs a mere 21 pounds and has a width of only nine inches, the Mantis is powerful, thanks to its three-speed electric motor.

A reliable push-button primer will get you started, but the tines won't move until you squeeze the throttle. Once you've activated the throttle, the patented serpentine tines spin at up to 240 RPM to break through sod--even hard clay--tilling down to a depth of 10 inches.

The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator makes it easy to maintain your garden. Simply reverse the tines to shallow-cultivate depths of up to three inches--it's much faster than using hand tools. And because it tills a nine-inch-wide path, this tool is especially useful in tight spaces and hard-to-reach areas. That's a real advantage for raised-bed gardeners.

Convenient, Versatile, and Durable
The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator features folding handle bars which make it convenient to store in a garage or tool shed.

And with optional attachments (sold separately), the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator can be used beyond the confines of your garden. Its lightweight design and convenient carrying handle make it portable, so adding an accessory such as a border edger or lawn aerator could potentially keep you busy all summer and into the fall.

The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator's durable one-piece cast gear box is designed to last. Additionally, the tines are guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the tool.

From the Manufacturer

The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator is an amazingly powerful, extremely quiet, and tool for your garden. Starting could not be easier simply plug it in, pick a speed and squeeze the throttle. An electric motor delivers approximately hp to the patented tines, spinning them at up to 240 RPM. This allows the Mantis Electric Tiller to easily break through sod and hard clay. The compact design tills a 9-inch wide path, making this tiller easy to maneuver narrow rows and along fences. A full range of optional attachments expand the capabilities of the Mantis Electric Tiller in the garden and your yard. Other attachments include a Plow, Planter\Furrower and Lawn Dethatcher sold separately. The entire tiller comes with a factory-backed 5 year consumer warranty that includes the engine. The tines are guaranteed for life against breakage.

Saw a lot of reviews all over the web before I bought the Mantis. I live in Chicago and have a small-ish garden out back approx 10-10. This little tiller works that soil without problem, and has helped with several other projects with friends and family.

Only con that I have found would be if you're tilling an area with a lot of roots the tiller will tangle rather quickly and pulling the tangles can be a hassle.

It is not going to till any huge area, but you shouldn't be looking at it if you have that big a need. If you've got small area(s) to till such as small gardens or raised beds or whatever, this will be perfect for you.

The electric version is quiet enough to use at 7am on a Sunday without waking the neighbors.

I am very satisfied with this purchase, and would recommend this tiller to anyone in a similar situation.

This is a good powerful tiller, but if you use it to do any serious gardening, the brushes in the motor will 'burn up' and need replacing. Use for no more than 10 minutes at a time, and let it cool off for at least a half hour (in the shade) before you use it again. I have two that 'burned up' after four months of use. I am hoping I can replace the brushes myself for less than what it would cost to return it under Mantis's one year guarantee (which I suspect they will be retracting in the future).

I would've rated this 5 stars when I first purchased it a few years back. It was quiet and just as powerful as the gas Mantis it replaced. But unlike the gas Mantis which had lots of use for many years before it worked poorly, this one has hardly had any use (we were too busy to garden the last 3 years).

Anyway, I took it out to use this year and it quits after a few minutes (yes, I cleared the roots etc, that is not the problem). I have to wait 5 minutes and then it quits again. Like something is overheating, but I don't smell any burning. For something I've used less than 20 times this is unacceptable.

Bumped up a star from my earlier review because I found it works until it gets too hot. On a warm day, that does not take too long. You need to hit the reset button once it cools down sufficiently (best to give it some time, not just 5 minutes), then it works again. When I had an issue (reported earlier) however, the local dealer who was also a Mantis support place just sat on the machine even though they told me it would be a week (need it for spring planting). Mantis has a 5 year warranty on this model ... but according to them it ony applies if you bought the Mantis directly from the company. With this kind of support, i can't give this 5 stars.

I bought this just prior to the 2011 season, and it does the job advertised. I was concerned it might not be as effective as the gas model which I used for years, but I was wrong. It tills just as well, eats sod, digs in just fine - in short - does a good job on the garden bed. That, however, is where the comparison ends. Unfortunately, the attention to detail I saw in the gas model is totally lacking in the electric. So is the sense of a durable, well built machine that will last many years. After minor assembly chores, I note that the machine is a bit flimsy when assembled. Not so much that you are disgusted by it, but enough to know it's not the same product the gas model was 10 years ago. It doesn't stay symetrical in use, and the head came already connected to the transmission, and it pivots at least 4 or 5 degrees in use. Tightening connections has not resolved the problems.

The biggest complaint I have is the big, bulky plastic handles and controllers. For starters, they are brittle plastic and quite bulky. Secondly, they were obviously thrown together at the factory without trial or concern for the hands of the user. The power "trigger" which has to be continually depressed while tilling is 'square' and sharp edged, and is surrounded by rough seams that cut into the finger rather quickly in use. The handles continually create blisters with any extended use, and my hands are not delicate. Further use of the machine will entail sanding down portions of the handle and trigger area, not something you should have to do at this price.

I'm hoping that the durability is there, despite the problems with design and detail work on the final production....but I'm not making any bets after using it.

I love my electric mantis.

Now, a quick word of advice for those who think electric means less powerful -- this product is not for wimps! NOOOOO way!!

To look at it, it is sleek and 'snappy' in a cute sort of way. But all that fluff ends when you squeeze the trigger. Then it becomes a bull on steroids!! No joke here. I have ground with rock and bentonite. This is just about as hard and uneven as it gets. This machine literally jumps forward and leaps into the air each time it hits an irregularity -- I have named it the 'little hopper'.It is like trying to plow with a cross between a bull and a kangaroo. It can rip up a 50 foot row, planting-ready, in less than 10 minutes.

Seniors, make sure you chug those energy drinks well in advance of spring, you are going to need the muscle because this pony can really jump out of your hands if you are not strong enough to hold it.

Don't believe those cute Mantis commercial shots of a senior walking slowly and nonchalantly behind the machine as it tills (not unless there is sand only in the ground) --- my mother couldn't handle this machine and she was very out-door oriented.

Thant is how powerful it is.
