Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A logical outgrowth of New York's straight-edge scene--which steered devotees clear of drink, drugs, and excessive behavior (other than loud guitars)--this intense foursome mixes hardcore sounds with a heavy dose of Krishna Consciousness. Yes, that's the same belief often disseminated by airport-based chanters, but Ray Cappo (formerly of Youth of Today) and company will never be confused with their orange-robed brethren--even though tracks like "Message to the Bhagvat" come directly from the same source. Fans of the charismatic Cappo's earlier music, and even some of Shelter's previous releases, might be put off by the pop leanings interposed here and there, but the anthemic quality (think U2 with considerably more brawn) of Mantra's best moments is impossible to deny. --David Sprague

Product Description

For any music fanatic devoted to the hardcore genre, the name Shelter is not unfamiliar. This New York-based group is best known for its founder and frontman, Ray Cappo, who is considered as one of the most prominent representatives of the charismatic 'krishnacore' scene, which conjoins the elements of hardcore music with a strong spiritual message based on Krishna Consciousness. Formed in the early 90's, Shelter was Cappo's second band - previously he was the frontman of Youth of Today, a straightedge hardcore group, in its time highly acclaimed by the underground community. Limited to 2,000 copies! --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Shelter at their best, March 26, 2002

I have 2 Shelter albums in addition to this one, and the others are way better. They are much more hardcore and less poppy. When I got this album I was expecting "Perfection Of Desire", but the songs on "Mantra" were much slower, happier, and lighter. If perhaps you thought Shelter's older stuff, or Youth of Today was too hard, then maybe this album is for you; otherwise stick with their older stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Shelter album, not as good as the old Youth of Today., September 22, 1998

The real hardcore fans should have this album in their collection, but don't expect the same energy as the Youth of Today albums have. More poppy sound but still the hardcore background. Better than their latest album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to enter but great once I did so., May 17, 2000

Albert (Barcelona, Catalonia) - See all my reviews

I bought this CD thanks to a video I saw on TV.Then I listened to the whole album, it was a bit disappointing;several weeks after I lost it for about a year and then heard it again and LOVED IT! The song are a good mixture of hard, fast and full of energy hardcore with melodic "poppy" parts. There is also a lot to think about the lyrics, even if you disagree. If you like hard rock, punk and of course hardcore you must have this album. If not, try it and you will have a nice surprise.
