Not Shelter at their best,
By Robert Solem (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I have 2 Shelter albums in addition to this one, and the others are way better. They are much more hardcore and less poppy. When I got this album I was expecting "Perfection Of Desire", but the songs on "Mantra" were much slower, happier, and lighter. If perhaps you thought Shelter's older stuff, or Youth of Today was too hard, then maybe this album is for you; otherwise stick with their older stuff.

Best Shelter album, not as good as the old Youth of Today.,

The real hardcore fans should have this album in their collection, but don't expect the same energy as the Youth of Today albums have. More poppy sound but still the hardcore background. Better than their latest album.

Hard to enter but great once I did so.,

I bought this CD thanks to a video I saw on TV.Then I listened to the whole album, it was a bit disappointing;several weeks after I lost it for about a year and then heard it again and LOVED IT! The song are a good mixture of hard, fast and full of energy hardcore with melodic "poppy" parts. There is also a lot to think about the lyrics, even if you disagree. If you like hard rock, punk and of course hardcore you must have this album. If not, try it and you will have a nice surprise.

Great music with a great message,

It's so nice to have an album that actually has a positive message behind it, without losing the quality of the music. Songs like "Empathy" and "Civilized Man" stand out. *Mantra* occasionally does sound a little "pop"-py, but you can't ignore the meaning behind it. Ray Cappo never sacrifices his beliefs or sells out his lyrics and that is more admirable than anything. Add this to your collection!

Krishna-core ruled!!! I worshiped this band back in the 90's. I mean, I still do but man, the concerts in the 90's were amazing in Philly. Shelter came to the Troc a lot and I have such fond memories. I used to know every song lyric of Mantra by heart. Ray even commented to me once after a show about how I sang along to every song. This album just spoke to me and I would like to think that it did the same for those that were also drawn to Krishna Consciousness. Not one bad song on this cd. Take the bad reviews with a grain of salt, please. Listen for yourself.

the best Shelter album...,

This album has plenty of energy, and a tight sound. It's Shelter's at their best. Songs like "Civilized Man" and "T.V." carry strong messages. ...A staple of any CD collection.

Mercy, Buddha!,

I got this CD cheap at the local CD shop in my town and i sorta expected this to be like WHEN 20 SUMMERS PASS". After the hysterical chanting intro, i get bombarded with the awful first track. In truth, the only songs i liked were "Civilized Man" and "Surrender to your TV". Personally, i think the lyrics are kinda lame and just sort of....there. No life changing songs or message, just a bad excuse for a hardcore record.
