This review is from: Mantras: Sacred Words of Power (Paperback)
What I was looking for was a collection of mantras, with a history and explanation to go with them, so in that respect I was disappointed. However, looking beyond that, I found this book quite interesting. Written as a result of both his travels and his studies, John Blofeld gives a rather thorough overview of mantra practice, the tradition behind it, and why mantras are so effective. Included is a good analysis of some of the better-known mantras in use from antiquity. If you're wanting to know why mantras "work" and how they make a difference, this would be a good reference. But if you're looking for an "encyclopedia of mantras" ~ in other words, a mantra for just about anything ~ then I would recommend "Healing Mantras" by Thomas Ashley-Farrand. However, a word of caution is necessary, as mantras are very powerful. It is not advisable to "go shopping" for a mantra like one would shop for a pair of shoes. Best to get your mantra from someone who has a deep understanding of the subject and who can give you a mantra that will best suit your needs.
