Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

To the uninitiated, the electro-whoosh and drum-box theatrics of Mantronik and MC Tee's 1986 debut may sound a bit dated. Yet this pioneering hip-hop album introduced a style and sound which blesses nearly all of today's beat-centered music, from the massive, head-knock electronics of "big beat" artists such as the Chemical Brothers to the 808-obsessed minimalism of the Cash Money clique. Mantronix's production and programming introduced synths, drum machines, and electro aesthetics to the young hip-hop nation. Bouncy, bass-heavy, and decidedly "electronic," The Album radically expanded the possibilities of electronic programming in hip-hop and dance music. Though overshadowed by Mantronix's production, MC Tee's brash and simple party-starter rhymes echo along brilliantly on the thundering (and appropriately titled) "Bassline." With classic b-boy jams "Needle to the Groove," "Fresh Is the Word," and the scratch-heavy "Hardcore Hip-Hop" also anchoring the album, it's safe to say countless careers were inspired by this modestly titled volume. --Hua Hsu

Product Description

With its futuristic production, the Album was way ahead of it's time when originally released in 1985 and featured all of their hit singles and some of the rawest hip hop ever released. Now the album has been remastered with five bonus tracks! EMI. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC IS BACK!, May 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mantronix - The Album (Audio CD)
This is a must-have album for any true hip-hop fan. Mantronik's production was truly ahead of its time. As with the sound of hip-hop in the mid to late eighties, the songs contain plently of 808 and 909 drum kicks and snares. This was probably one of the most underappreciated albums in the culture. I'm glad to see it's back. We can only hope that Warlock will reprint 'Music Madness' and Capitol will reprint 'In Full Effect'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic must-buy album, May 11, 1999
By
Papa Smurf (Silver Spring, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mantronix - The Album (Audio CD)
This is an all-time classic album from the King of the Beats himself: Mantronik. He was one to the most underrated and underappreciated producers of hiphop but his work has stood the test of time. This album itself contains five classics: Bassline , Ladies, Fresh is the Word, Needle to the Groove (which Beck sampled for Where It's At) and Hard Core Hip Hop (which Master P sampled for "It A'int my Fault" remix) This is a classic album of mid '80s hip hop. A must for the collection of any true hiphop fan.
