Editorial Reviews

Eponymously-titled album from Manu Katche. On his fourth ECM disc, Manus unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummers, and it lifts up the soloists. Personnel in the ever-changing Katche band currently includes Norwegians Nils Pettter Molvaer and Tore Brunborg, first heard together on ECM in the band Masqualero in the 1980s: they still play most attractively together. British keyboardist Jim Watson also makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ. Recorded March 2012 in the South of France, and issued on the eve of a major European tour.

As a percussionist myself, my drumming teacher from LA once told me how he knew that he'd "made it" when another sage drummer listened to him play and later said, "You have your own thing... your own sound."

To him, that was his cherished moment of respected peer validation.

When I'm listening to a jazz station and hear signature music symbols via tasty additions of the splash cymbals, I know almost immediately that it's probably Manu Katche that I'm listening to. His style is distinct... and all his own... and he owns how he plays with grace, verve, taste, and style.

Myself, I first became aware of Manu in the early 1990's as Peter Gabriel's drummer. Then in taking lessons from my LA drumming mentor, he brought me Manu's initial solo release when he came back from a Japan tour, and *he* was seriously impressed.

This new solo CD by Manu only raises the bar of the excellence he exudes in so many musical ways, and I highly recommend it. It's a strong, strong jazz release... and oh yeah, when I've got a fever for splash cymbal, Manu's CD is what I'd prescribe. ;-)

Happy Listening...

I have been following Manu Katche's CD's on ECM and for the most part, I have liked what I have heard. This new CD: Manu Katche, with Nils Petter Molvaer ; trumpet, Tore Brunborg on sax and Jim Watson on piano and Hammond B-3 is an interesting release. In my opinion, this CD is a mixed bag. I like some of the pieces here but not all the CD.

One of the most interesting facts is that the band does not have a bass player, so the bass lines have to come from the pedals in the Hammond B-3 and this is very interesting. Follow the bass lines in all the songs and you will find them really interesting.
One thing is for sure: Manu Katche's drumming is fantastic throughout the entire disc. I love to hear him play the drums the way he does it...... if you can separate your attention and just follow the drumming lines, you will love this CD.

Regarding the pieces of this CD, probably the best song in my opinion is Beats and Bounce , where the band, really takes off. There is some real jazz coming off here.
There is some introspection to this release. You need to work on it to like it.

I have heard Manu with Sting and lately with Kyle Eastwood. He has a very unique sound and drumming style that is easy for me to pick up on. His style is somewhat similar to Omar Hakim but Manu seems to like the cymbals a little more and like to play in different time signatures too. It's been a while since I have heard Omar play so I may have to find some of his current material. There is no bass player on this CD and I thought that would detract but it did not. The organ has made up for that absence quite nicely. I have already purchased another Manu Katche CD and will review it after a good listen.

There are a few names that when they pop up in the new release category I have to buy it. Manu Katche is one of those names. His music never seems to stop exciting me with something new. It's always introspective, layered and well-composed in that vein of jazz that simply applies emotion to what could be a jazz soundtrack of life. On his newest release simply titled "Mau Katche" the artist throws in an exciting new wrinkle, the famed Hammond B-3 organ.
Here the organ is not used solely for its funk inducing properties as usual, but still provides a tinge of it. Here provides more of a deeply pastoral bottom while also serving the bass lines. What you end up getting s not s much an in your face bass sound but a sound that becomes bass seasoning. It allows the mood to flow without taking the attention away from the musical intent. simply sublime,

I only came to know of this music through my local jazz radio, KBEM-FM. The tune "Beats & Bounce" (misidentified by the DJ as "Short Ride") captured my attention immediately, the trumpet line reminding me of Jon Hassell's work. Taking the chance of buying music based upon on tune, I separated myself from hard-earned cash. I was not disappointed. The sequence Walking by Your Side/Imprint/Short Ride/Beats & Bounce/Slowing the Tides is some of the best music I have heard in years. Highly recommended!

I saw Manu Katche at the Paris Jazz Festival in summer 2013, and absolutely loved this band. This CD is absolutely outstanding for both composition and performance. Very inspired playing by all the musicians and a good variety of songs and arrangements.

After the first two or three listens to this record, I was not impressed. Lo and behold, after a few more listens, I am absolutely LOVING this record. It will grow on you, just give it time. Subtle elegance.

Manu makes great records for Manfred. There is no doubt. The compositions are always crisp and the music is played sympathetically. His opener for ECM, Neighborhood, was impossibly slick and polished. An admirable quality, but I want to hear things free up a bit. The subsequent records have gradually leaned in this direction, and, fortunately, the fourth offering creeps the furthest in this direction.

As always, music boils down to the sound, and the sound here is rich and lush. Katche's drums in particular are unmistakable, and he's almost the stickler Paul Motian was in how his instrument sounds. Almost. Molvaer is a welcome addition to Manu's horn section. I miss him on ECM. His career should have taken off and been huge stateside, he's a freaking brilliant trumpeter. Brunborg continues as Katche's foil, I think Manu has a saxophone in his soul. I wish Mr. Watson had tickled the keys on the hammond a bit more. Manu's drums under two horns with the B3 setting the scene is a brilliant and memorable sound.

I am loving the Katche career on ECM, and this is a worthy follow-up. Five stars? Not nearly enough. 700 stars.
