5.0 out of 5 stars Airway Management, January 24, 2007

This review is from: Manual of Emergency Airway Management (Paperback)
This is a "classic" masterpiece for those needing to grasp the fundamentals of airway management. Both the novice and the experienced physician will gain from reading this book edited by Ron Walls, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Harvard. Dr. Walls and his co-authors have been the leaders of teaching this subject matter for the last few years. This book is a distillation of their teaching this subject.

Unlike many other sources, this book is right to the point and keeps it's explanations clinically relevant. I'd classify this book as being "gold" and one for my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Research-based and comprehensive, October 4, 2006

Mr. H (Middle of America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Manual of Emergency Airway Management (Paperback)
There are many good airway management books. However, Manual of Emergency Airway Management is, without a doubt, one of the finest texts written on airway management. Of particular note is the extended discussion on the use of the bag valve mask. Many texts, including textbooks, gloss over the techniques of BMV as if it was too pedestrian. Walls has not.

Everything is well-researched and based not on opinion, but objectively supported by significant research with gobs of footnotes. The first chapter alone, discussing the decision to intubate, is worth the price of the book itself.

While geared mostly to emergency physicians, there is significant value for the pre-hospital provider. Walls has not done any favors for the pre-hospital community by designating a single, and rather brief, chapter on pre-hospital airway management. Despite this, well over half of the chapters pertain directly to improving airway management skills for providers of all levels, from first responder to ED physician.

While and excellent text overall, the paltry sections specific to the pre-hospital provider need improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent airway book, October 3, 2006
This review is from: Manual of Emergency Airway Management (Paperback)
It is my personal opinion that anyone involved with care of emergency medical patients (from EMT to MD) should own this book. The book is more comprehensive than a slaam class (at around 50 dollars is much less expensive), and covers everything from the decision to intubate to considerations for special populations
