Book Description

Now for the first time, practitioners have access to a huge database of normal values, developed using the most modern scientific protocols, for virtually any patient population! Normal ranges take into account age, sex, height and body mass index for a wide range of demographic groups to provide a complete set of reliable values for everyday clinical practice. For each nerve fiber, the author provides the nerve root level, the peripheral nerve level, and the plexus pathway. In addition, for the most common studies performed, normal ranges are provided for onset latency, amplitude, area, duration of the wave, and nerve conduction velocity across various segments. Other benefits of this outstanding book: * Provides helpful hints for performing each study * Covers the latest, most up-to-date techniques for conducting nerve sensory tests * Codifies the acceptable differences in latency, amplitude, nerve conduction velocity, etc. between nerves of the same or opposite limbs, allowing for a more precise diagnosis * Provides precise written descriptions as well as schematic depiction of electrode placements * Includes typical waveform appearance for the most common studies * Offers a concise list of references and suggested readings for each study * Includes advantages and pitfalls of alternative techniques

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Its wider appeal for the novice or junior practising electrophysiologist is its descriptions and diagrams detailing electrode positioning and examples of typical, expected waveforms. It is for this reason that I might find myself with this book at the bedside, especially for some of those more obscure cutaneous sensory nerves..."

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for quick reference, June 2, 2000

This review is from: Manual of Nerve Conduction Studies (Plastic Comb)
I have used this book numerous times recently to complete more comprehensive nerve conduction studies. I find it more detailed and more inclusive than many of the other manuals for these tests. Its organization lends itself well to facilitating testing. Information is easily accessed and always pertinent. The author skillfully combines common accepted protocols with more detailed, less commonly used tests to offer a greater finesse. Clinically, it has enabled more efficient accurate results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, yet succinct, March 30, 2010

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. I had formerly utilized the Delisa reference book, as well as Ma & Liveson. While M & L was very inclusive, it was not terribly useful in a pinch, and offered more options than were practical. Delisa's book is up to date, but not terribly detailed.

This book occupies all of the middle space. It offers a compendium of tests that should serve anyone that performs nerve conduction very well. In addition, this text offers normal values that are stratified by other factors such as age, BMI, and height, and includes guideline values for side to side differences, diminished amplitudes and conduction velocity changes over short segments - lending itself to more sensitive examination. Of course there are limitations to the applicability of some information, but I'd rather have more options than fewer. I have equipment that will also allow me to utilize some of the additional normal values, or I can simply test and then compare additional measurements prior to completing my report.

Overall a very well written, thorough reference for the clinic. I'd appreciate any edition with tabs, however. Once I set it down and want to find a particular study, it's succinctness becomes a problem - even a couple of sticking pages will put me ahead or past a particular study that I'm looking for.
