Fantastic Turntabe, August 20, 2005
This review is from: Two Speed Manual Turntable with Removeable Headshell & AT-98E Cartridge (Electronics)
This appears to be the Thorens TD-295 Mk. III or IV (little difference). I own one and absolutely love it. It functions silently and flawlessly. Amazing sonic qualities. Tone arm excellent. My table has an Ortofon cartridge... don't know about the AT-98. My setup: Low-mass, tracks over seriously warped records, and you'd never know anything was wrong. Not too wild about felt mat. Other than that, no complaints. This is a semi-automatic unit. There is an optic senser that shuts the motor off at the end of the record, but there is nothing mechanical in the automation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Best Turntable I've Ever Owned!, July 29, 2009
This review is from: Two Speed Manual Turntable with Removeable Headshell & AT-98E Cartridge (Electronics)
First off, MY review is for the Thorens 295 MK IV with the Audio Technica cartridge. I just got mine last Saturday and set it up on Monday. This is by far the best record player I've ever had the joy of owning! I know there are even MORE EXPENSIVE Thorens turntables available, all the way up to $20,000! I payed a little over $1,000 for mine and I'm satisfied completely! With this record player, I finally understand the sound benefits of 180 gram vinyl. My last record player, which was a JVC A95BK from 1990, played my 180 gram vinyl with great sound quality, BUT NOT LIKE THIS TURNTABLE DOES! I've been playing my albums left and right since this Monday and I've really been able to "GET INTO" them with this turntable. It's CD quality sound....but better! Stereophonic sound has never sounded trippier to my ears. The TD 295 has great even balance in the channels. Don't even get me started on Jimi Hendrix's "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)" off "Electric Ladyland!" OUTTA SIGHT!
HOWEVER, A BIT OF FOREWARNING FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING THIS TURNTABLE: I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS TURNTABLE FROM ANY ONE OTHER THAN AN AUTHORIZED THORENS DEALER. I did some research as to who was a dealer and who wasn't because I DID NOT want any problems with this new record player! Believe me, I was glad I did. If you want to buy a Thorens turntable, this or another one, consult 2-Channel Distribution (you can find them on the net) as to where the closest dealer is near you. I live in Downey and I found out there is a Thorens dealer just two cities away in Whittier. It was so exciting to be able to go to an actual Hi-Fi store and buy a record player just like in the old days. The sales clerk was more than helpful and showed me how to set up the tonearm and weight right there in the store. Yes, I payed a little more than some of the prices listed here on Amazon but it was worth it, because I have a warranty and also someone to turn to if I have a question or problem. I see people trying to buy this turntable on E-Bay and if something goes wrong with the table, they're going to be screwed. So I HIGHLY recommend this turntable to anyone seeking a great high end record player, but please take heed to my advice about where you purchase one. Peace.
