Book Description

April 1, 2004 0721601235 978-0721601236 1
Manual of Veterinary Dietetics is a comprehensive guide to diet and feeding recommendations for both healthy and sick pets. Recommendations are based on actual physical and nutritional assessment of patients and are designed to meet the wishes of concerned owners and the practical realities of the home environment. Nutritional management solutions address the particular health needs of patients, giving consideration to such issues as life stages, diet acceptance, medical response, and long-term benefit. The ultimate goal is to promote and sustain the nutritional health of pets in a manner that actively involves the owner and enhances the quality of the human-pet relationship.
  • Comprehensive coverage encompasses a number of pet species, with special attention paid to dogs and cats and helpful references for common exotic pets
  • Easy-to-read format and style make this text useful for both pet owners at home and professionals in the clinical setting
  • Helpful chapters address questions concerning attributes and efficacy of various commercial foods, assess the validity of advertising claims, and suggest recipes for homemade foods when they are indicated
  • Thorough consideration of the most current information on nutrient-sensitive diseases and interventional approaches
  • Numerous tables, figures, charts, and forms thoroughly present relevant and useful information for both medical professionals and pet owners

Expansive appendixes include:

  • Detailed nutrient comparison tables for commercial pet foods
  • Feeding directions for prevention of nutrition-related orthopedic diseases
  • Simple instructions for gastrostomy tube feeding and maintenance
  • Tables, figures, charts and forms that make dietary tracking and home monitoring easy

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Manual of Veterinary Dietetics has been produced by a team of authors with profound veterinary and nutritional knowledge. It is a comprehensive guide to diet for healthy and diseased pet animals and does not restrict itself to commercial diets and indeed looks carefully at advertising claims, noting the paucity of evidence behind some of these.

The authors note in their preface that they have chosen to present information in a different way to most pet nutrition books, becasue they intend to help practioners, technicians and students, to help owners with their worries, rather than teach nutrition. This is clear from the opening pages and the book is eminently successful in its aim. Much can be learnt here, even by those who are already experienced practitioners, as the advice extends beyond the nutritional consultation. - Edward Chandler, The Animal Health Trust
