I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

I purchased this edition of Turabian as a Kindle book. I own several earlier editions in paper but needed a more current one to match references from an editor. The update is good in terms addressing several modern reference techniques in bibliography and footnote format. But the Kindle edition is difficult to navigate to the extent that it is nearly useless. If you do not need to use Turabian, count yourself lucky. If you are forced to use it, then purchase a paper copy.

My granddaughter, currently a High School Senior, was totally frustrated by writing research papers (and concerned about her ability to handle college-level assignments). I still had my 1973 smaller version of this book from my own college days (as a 30-something adult), so I knew it would address her concerns; i.e., proper paragraph formation, types of info to include, how to start and summarize opening and closing paragraphs, etc. So it was a "no brainer" when I located this updated version of a book I highly valued, AND at a price I could afford on my budget. I was not surprised when she said it was "perfect...exactly what I needed". I also got another copy for my other granddaughter (already in college) and for myself.

Every liberal arts graduate student ought to have this manual. Provides quick references and help to complete your thesis or dissertation. Consider also getting The Chicago Manual of Style (16th Edition).

Well worth the $$.

It has chapters to help you define your topic or hypotheses. Chapters on research, Chapters on deciding who your audience is and then writing appropriately and Chapters on Chicago Style referencing are all included.

This book is an easy to follow, step-by-step, writing manual that works for everything from writing High School papers to College and even early-Master's level papers.

It has a great 'tree' of starting and then saying if you have your subject, skip to here, if you need to develop a question go to ___ chapter, and so on.

Fairly inexpensive and well worth the money.

The 8th edition is the latest update on this standard for students and teachers using the Turabian method for citations. The 8th edition continues with the more significant changes introduced in the 7th edition (like the 3-em dash vs. the 7-space underline for repeated authors in a bibliography), but also adds more information about using and citing online sources and electronic books.

Like most people who own it, I bought A Manual for Writers because I was required to do so. Being that it is a definitive reference on its subject means that there is not much room for personal opinion on the matter. If you write in Turabian style, you read Turabian's book on style. I do really prefer the Chicago/Turabian style for writing. The citations are full, accessible, and informative without breaking the flow of the text the way parenthetical documentation does. If one uses the footnote style of citation, the source information and any other notes on the subject are available on the same page if the reader is interested, but they are segregated to the bottom of the page if he/she isn't. I find the format of the book a bit iffy. there can be a bit of flipping back and forth between the full info on a subject in one place and the more general template in another. Also the fact that the outlining of the book goes into five or six levels seems a bit silly,(e.g. Section 22.13.4.2.2) though I don't know how else one could organize a reference on the subject.
