Book Description

May 30, 2006
At night, Manuel Muldoon, a magna-cum-barely high-school graduate, dreams of two things: leaving Marshlake, Texas, and becoming a successful mystery writer. By day, the often-belittled half-Irish, half-Mexican young man is houseboy to the town’s first family of banking: Robert and Nancy Sturmwell and their spoiled daughter Miss Victoria, and sometimes Robert’s nephew Jeff and his beautiful wife Erica. With the family away on vacation, Manny agonizes over his first novel and revels in the peace—until the family returns and a contractor sees an arm sticking out of the unfinished swimming pool wall. Framed for one murder, implicated in another, Manny confides in Vicky while evading police and the murderer on a fast-paced, dangerous trip to uncover the truth. A sleepy Texas town, drug money laundering, a jealous roommate, a crooked banker in league with a crooked cop, and a na¯ve writer-to-be converge in Manuel Muldoon.

More About the Author

Biography

In order to clear up any future confusion, let's take a moment and let me explain who I am and why I write these columns each and every week. First off, I was born at a very early age. I arrived in this world with very little and still have most of it. It The big war (WWII) was going on and according to my parents, names were being rationed out. My Mom was kind of slow and couldn't run very fast. I guess by the time she got down to the Federal Bureau of Names, all of the Johns, Jims, and Davids were gone. That was her story and she stuck with it.

So, according to what I've been told...she just settled on two names that were the same, but weren't. As in Peary Perry. As you can imagine, I've heard every kind of comment that can be made on this matter since I was born. "Peary Perry...quite contrary...." and so on and so on. Leaving a message for someone on the phone requires me to maintain a certain sense of patience. I've been getting comments all of my life, but this is the first time these people have ever heard a name like this. Some people (seems to be more and more) just hang up because they think I'm kidding them or something. I have contemplated using an alias, but then it kinds of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? The really weird thing about my name has occurred in the last few years since voice mail became so popular. I'll leave a message for someone and get a return call from him or her asking to speak with 'Craig'. Now, I can see how they might think I said, Jerry, Larry or Terry, but Craig?

The most original one I ever heard was from some lady on the phone who started to say something and then stopped in mid sentence..."You know I'll bet you've heard just about every comment there is and I don't think I have anything original to say..." That was unique. I won't bore you with the details of my youth, but just let it be sufficient to say that I had a good time. Once I was out of high school, I couldn't afford to go to college, or really want to, so off I went in the Army. Spent 3 years there, came home and became a cop. Spent 7 years working undercover as a vice squad/ narcotics officer and then left to go into business for myself. This is where I've been ever since.

I suppose, I always wanted to write about life in general. I like people and think that we need to see the bright side of just about everything. Humor is good for our souls. . Some years ago, a friend of mine started a newspaper and asked me to write a weekly column for him. I goofed around and didn't really put out much effort into what I was supposed to be doing. I ended up in a creative writing course in a local college. The instructor asked if any of us ever wrote anything that had been published. Proudly, I raised my hand. He asked how often...and I told him that I did, whenever I got the time.... He then asked me "If you have an opportunity to write and you don't...then why are you in this course?" I didn't have an answer, so I went back, sat down and have been knocking these out every week for the past 25 years or so.

If you read these, you know these are about life and it's many mysteries. I try to blend in humor, satire, sadness and laughter to everything I write about. I am always looking for sources for next weeks story. I think your mind is a muscle and you have to keep using it to stay in practice. I am constantly looking for something to write about each and every week. Sometimes, you can see if I've had a good week by the stress that shows up in this column. Most of us have good and bad weeks in our daily lives. In the near future I will have a web page that will allow me to get this out to others who have expressed a desire to read my stories. I appreciate your reading what I have written. I hope you are able to see the humor and human side of life that we all experience while we are on planet earth. This writing thing is a great hobby for me, but is therapeutic as well. If I can write something that you agree with or that makes you smile and have a better day...then all of my efforts are certainly worthwhile. I'll keep on cranking these out as long as you keep reading. Take care, and have a good day...Remember to be good to yourself....then you'll be good to others in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manuel Muldoon, July 19, 2006
This review is from: Manuel Muldoon (Paperback)
Peary Perry's name will be added to the top of Texas Authors. The characters are brought to life in a way that only Perry can do. Manuel Muldoon is a want-to-be mystery writer who finds himself the prime suspect in an intriguing murder. Maybe it is because he is the "only" person on the property of the wealthy local banker where a body is found! This is a murder "set in concrete" in a sleepy Texas town, three hundred miles from Mexico. You will enjoy the twists as young Manny does his best investigative work trying to clear his name and help bring justice and peace back to Marshlake, Texas.

Manuel Muldoon captured my interest from the first page on through to the end. Excellent character development and a believable story. Author did an excellent job of describing the locations in Texas and Colorado and captured the realistic views of small town life and politics. Hurry up and write your second book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Along Came Vicky, July 24, 2006

Peary Perry's Marshlake is a little bit like a Peyton Place with babes with great shapes who can't walk straight and selfish/foolish guys. How smart can a guy be who marries one of those babes and then signs over the huge family tru$t to her? It's just that she doesn't realize what she's got and then a galpal from her past shows up and plasters her inside the wall of a swimming pool. This galpal knew too much and tried to cash in on the way too not legal business of the folks at Marshlake. Violent exit for the galpal.

Now let's get cynical. Manny (Manuel Muldoon) is from the wrong side of the tracks. Not a stellar student in school but maybe he can do better with his writing. Too bad he likes to write mysteries about ice pick murders. Too bad he works for the rich spoiled of Marshlake who have two bodies to hang around someone's neck.Thank God for truckers who can size things up over just a cup of coffee. The chapters at the last come fast. Finally along came Vicky.
