From the Publisher

As today's manufacturers strive to improve their agility and productivity to meet customer demand, their software buying needs have become increasingly complex and system options more fragmented. SCM/ERP Defined: SCM/ERP is not a new software technology. Instead, the SCM/ERP concept helps organize how manufacturers and vendors can view manufacturing enterprise applications as a whole. The aim was to provide an approach for a unified planning and organization of corporate operations going beyond even recognized major software systems like ERP, MRP II and MES. The scope of SCM/ERP includes systems known as supply chain management, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), dynamic and interactive planning, distribution, warehousing, transportation, field service, product configuration, project management, financials, accounting, human resources, engineering and decision support. SCM/ERP also takes into account the fact that today's applications rely on the ability for considerable sharing of cross-functional data. SCM/ERP is a phrase that represents systems used to manage and synchronize the organizational activities for increased customer responsiveness, quality assurance, efficiencies and profitability.

PFAS Defined: Plant Floor Automation is the class of systems used by engineers and operations to execute production activities and interact with planning systems and equipment devices. These systems provide immediate and detailed information about production operations and resources, usually in the form of graphs and charts. Generally, they are used on a plant floor, in a lab or by engineers. Sometimes, companies purchase Plant Floor Automation systems to track and manage product flow, costs and resource equipment. Others seek to control and improve production by integrating real-time process data with problem solving tools. As a concept, Plant Floor Automation may be implemented in different ways. Some companies select individual systems to address a process requirement or a manufacturing problem. Eventually systems purchased separately are networked together for plant-wide connectivity. Others select a single fully integrated Plant Floor Automation system, which supports multiple process requirements.

CMMS Defined: The acronym CMMS represents Computerized Maintenance Management Systems. These software systems were designed to assist in the planning, management, implementation and administrative procedures required for effective maintenance. CMMS benefits include: Increases in quality assurance Increases in production Reductions in maintenance downtime Reductions in emergency service and repairs Reductions in capital and human resource allocation Reductions in repair of maintenance errors caused by poor documentation and record keeping
