Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Jennifer Quasha's Shorthaired Cats in America.

Gr. 2-4. These two titles in the new Kids Cat Library series will feed cat fever in younger middle-graders. Shorthaired Cats touches on varying American attitudes toward cats from the Mayflower to the present day, citing their association with the Salem witch trials, their portrayal in the media, and the therapeutic benefits of pet ownership. Manx briefly covers some characteristics of the breed and the myth of how Manx cats lost their tails. In some instances the text is so simplified it's almost misleading: "petting a cat can help lower high blood pressure." But the focus on specific breeds and the many color close-ups will satisfy animal fans and may encourage reluctant readers who are enthusiastic about the subject. A glossary and Web resources are appended. See the companion Dogs throughout History series reviewed in this issue under Feldman, Heather. Gillian Engberg

I have been writing since I was nine years old.
Here is one of my first works, one my father has memorized.
It's a poem.

FEET

"Feet are neat.
They are neat
Because they are feet."

I hope I've improved since then.

For the last thirteen years I have been writing about pets, kids, health, and humor.
