Book Description

3 and upP and up
Written by noted early learning specialist Bill Gillham, How Many Sharks in the Bath? reflects the very latest in educational research and takes a fresh approach to teaching numbers from zero to ten. Packed with fun activities and clear, lively and colorful illustrations, this book is the perfect way to help children truly understand quantities rather than just reciting numbers in order and to recognize the spelling of each number. The books includes the number zero, an important and often ignored element in early numeracy and helps to familiarize children with taking numbers out of order and associating the word and numeral to the quantities on the page. Youngsters get to count how many penguins there are in the shower, how many ostriches are in a bed, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–This colorful title gives children the opportunity to practice numbers 0 through 10. Each spread features two smiling youngsters interacting with creatures that are engaged in whimsical tasks, such as swinging from light fixtures, zooming down a slide, and getting their hair done at a salon. The book begins by instructing adults to read the questions posed by the animals that appear on the left margin (e.g., How many lizards running round the table?), help youngsters count them, and point to the corresponding numbers–both Arabic and written–that are presented on the right margin. With this effective layout, listeners always know where to look for the numbers. The scenes take place over the course of a day, beginning with breakfast and ending with bedtime. The brightly colored backgrounds and boldly drawn cartoons have lots of child appeal. There are so many details packed into each spread that readers can make up questions about other items to look for and tally up. It is refreshing to have a counting book that includes zero, which is often overlooked. A good purchase for concept-book shelves.–Linda Zeilstra Sawyer, Skokie Public Library, IL

5.0 out of 5 stars New Counting Book, September 14, 2005

This review is from: How Many Sharks in the Bath? (Hardcover)
Not the usual type of counting book, this title combines traditional counting activities with a simple "I Spy" flair on each double page spread. Each spread features a different scene, from kitchen to playground to bedroom, in which different numbers of animals frolic in fun. A child in each picture encourages the reader to "count the animals and put your finger on the number" found in a list on the right side of the page. Four different types of animals in various numbers appear in each spread, prompting the reader in a column on the left. Once prereaders are comfortable with the basic mechanics of counting, the book is simple enough to be read alone as a seek and count activity. Enforcing number concepts playfully, this counting book will have more reading mileage as children become comfortable with counting and number recognition. Zero, often neglected in counting books, is also introduced. There might be two sharks in the bathtub, but no octopuses on the towel rail!

This book is wonderful for teaching number concept to toddlers and preschoolers, but not recommended for large storytime groups with its interactive format.

Highly recommended.
