Book Description

January 15, 1998
If you have ever been puzzled about where you can and cannot mountain bike legally, or what type of challenge you will find on a particular trail or even just had a hard time finding or following the trail, Arizona Mapping Kompany has solved these mysteries for you. Each map in the series details hundreds of miles of trails and color-codes them according to their level of difficulty. No more guessing how far or how difficult a trail is.

“Trails of the Tucson Area”, “Trails of East Phoenix”, and “Trails of West Phoenix” comprise “The Map” series and are all premiere area trail guides. Each map contains hundreds of miles of rated trails, accurate route descriptions, gorgeous photographs, easy to read color coded topography and pertinent information on weather, resources, and guidelines for safe hiking and riding. These maps may even be more durable than the user - they are all printed on waterproof, tear resistant plastic paper - that is even recyclable!

While “The Map” is geared for mountain bikers, all the routes and trails can easily be adapted for any trail user. In fact, some trails are better suited for hiking than riding. The guides are thorough but extremely user friendly and also claim to be consistent with “legend and crazy bar talk.” Unfolded these maps are large enough to show great detail, yet fold down to a concise size - a must for your fanny pack or jersey, right next to your spare tubes and energy bar.

According to Frank Martin, owner of the Bike Barn in Phoenix, Az., “The Map" is long overdue. For years my customers have been asking for an accurate, comprehensive, easy to read map of the trails in and around Phoenix. And now I can give it to them.”

The Tucson Map, already a classic, has been updated and is now joined by the soon to be classics, Phoenix East and Phoenix West. And if that isn’t enough for “trailheads”, rumor has it that the crew at AMK is working on trail maps of the Grand Canyon and Prescott.

About the Author

The Arizona Mapping Kompany is comprised of Aaron Reyes, Mary Halfmann, and Kevin Lockart(hence the AMK). We are three native Arizonans who collectively mountain bike, hike, and climb the great outdoors of Arizona. Not only do we have an intimate knowledge of the areas on the maps, but we serve on committees and boards that preserve and protect these areas, lead and teach trail building and maintenance projects, and do clinics to introduce novices to the sports and areas that we love.

This review is from: The Map : Trails of West Phoenix (Map)
Being new to the Phoenix area and new to mountain biking I found this map extremely helpfull. It's more descriptive and accurate than the many hiking books that I own. As a beginner on the bike, I found the rated trails and routes very accurate which is the exception to the rule of most books. This map should prove useful to any trail user. I know I'll use it for hiking as well. I can see that without it I would have missed out on some the better trails in my area. If you love to bike or hike as much as I do, do yourself or a friend a favor and get this book!!!!
