Book Description

January 1, 1999
When the MAPLE DALE Equestrian Center is sold to a developer, Leah as its headmistress is so determined to prevent its imminent destruction, not even death will stop her. Fiercely independent, but lost and alone, for the first time in her life she must rely on others, learn how to trust, and ultimately to forgive. Compelling and heartwarming, Maple Dale is the story of her relationship with her students and the family she never knew she had. A family as diverse and troubled as you've ever met, and yet who must come together in singular purpose, for Leah's sake. MaryAnn Myers, author of critically acclaimed first novel Call Me Lydia, storyteller extraordinaire, proves to be a master of allegory in Maple Dale, and will make you wonder. A book to read, to give to a friend, to discuss, and to read again. A treasure.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Lighthouse Literary Press is proud to publish MaryAnn Myers' long-awaited second novel. It is a book that will appeal to all ages, and a book to remember. MaryAnn Myers' first novel, titled Call Me Lydia, received rave reviews. To cite a few, "Myers sets a quick pace," Carl E. Feather of the Star Beacon says. "(Those in the age group of the twenty-year olds) will find it easy to relate with Lydia." Kevin M. Bolan of the News Herald writes, "A novel? Set in a job shop? It might sound curious and hard to pull off, but Call Me Lydia' is almost pure narrative, the mysteries of Merchant Manufacturing's problems unfolding to you as they do to Lydia." "Myers makes you care about the strong-willed Lydia in a few pages," the Beacon Journal raves. "It's Now columnist Steve Love guarantees twentysomethings will identify with Lydia Merchant." The Bainbridge Banter, "A compelling tale of romance and industrial espionage." Ohioana writes, "Throughout the story runs a line of intrigue and mystery.... And the reader is not sure of the solution until the end."

From the Author

Maple Dale took approximately two and a half years to write, and was inspired by actual events. As an equestrian and horse trainer, my husband and I traveled the country and would return home to Ohio only for vacations. When our daughter turned five and was ready to start school, we decided to return home for good. I had sold my favorite horse about three years earlier, because he'd gotten too old to travel cross-country without risk to his health, so one of the first things I did was go look for him. I checked all the stables I knew, was told they thought he was here and then there, and in my travels happened onto a farm where I used to teach riding. It was closed, sold, and ready for development. It was a ghost town. I walked into one of the barns that had the doors open, and looked around. It was eerie, I could almost see and hear the horses. I saw them tacked and ready to go. I saw them eating and bed down for the night. I had so many memories of this place. I turned to leave then, and saw the names of some of the horses I knew still listed on the blackboard for the blacksmith. No one had erased them. And that's when Maple Dale was born.

5.0 out of 5 stars MaryAnn Meyers...the Artisit, April 4, 2001

This review is from: Maple Dale (Paperback)
MaryAnn Meyers is a true artist. Maple Dale, as with the other books I have read by MaryAnn, is a canvas on which she has painted her characters in livid fashion. She stirs emotion with a heartwarming story line that floats like the spirit of the main character, Leah. You find yourself despising the villan, feeling empathy for the young equestrian and demanding justice for the headmistress of Maple Dale.

Although I know very little about horses and riding, Maple Dale was a wonderful read and continues to solidify my position as a true MaryAnn Meyers fan.

From someone who doesn't read much, I found I couldn't put this book down. I just had to find out what would happen next. Maple Dale will make you laugh and cry but thru it all you'll find a character you can completely relate to. A true story with real emotion, at the end you'll just want more. I have given the book as gifts several times and everyone has agreed, this IS a great story. I hope that MaryAnn gives us many more great books, readers need more wonderful stories like hers. What an imagination!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a defintely good read., October 11, 1999

Do you believe in ghosts? Maple Dale, the horse farm, turned into a living complex has a ghost. She affects the lives of all who come in contact with her spirit.

This is an uplifting ghost story of how death affects the living. It demonstrates feelings that exist beneath the surface and are slowly revealed in the day to day contact of one human being with another, both living and dead.

Maple Dale also portrays the essential value of hope. Hope can destroy prejudism, pain, and disillusionment as it does in MaryAnn Myers novel. This book shows how hope brings together people who would not have met but for the death of one solitary woman.

Maple Dale is a good read and I recommend it highly.
