I'm always a fan of theme cookbooks - ones that use a specific ingredient. I've got some on edamame, duck, and so on. So when I had the chance to get a cookbook on pure maple syrup, I leap at the chance. I love maple syrup, but it seems most people only use it as a topping for breakfast carbs or with baked beans, so I really wanted to see the recipes this cookbook suggested. I have to say, after reading the book and trying out several of the recipes, I was very impressed.

There are 100 recipes in the cookbook (which should be obvious from the title) and yes, quite a few play off the stereotypical use of maple syrup. There aforementioned baked beans recipe is in here as is sausage with a hint of maple (turkey, not pork!) and as a topic for things like French toast and waffles, but once you get past the obvious uses, the cookbook does try mix things up a lot. In the breakfast section you'll find ways to use maple syrup in parfaits, smoothies, muffins, or as an ingredient IN the breakfast baked goods like pancakes or waffles as well as in its usual topping form. There are even six different ways to make your own flavored maple syrup, which is fun. In stores the only fruit flavored maple syrup tends to lack any actual maple syrup at all and is just sugar and corn syrup. Yuck.

Once you get out of the breakfast section, you get to see a lot of creativity from the author. In "Drinks and Appetizers," you'll see maple syrup used in everything from alcoholic drinks to chicken satay and a nice seared duck with tobacco plum sauce.in "Soups, Side Dishes and Salads" you will find ways to make four different salad dressings (Maple Ranch for my wife) and a lot of fun things to make.

Maple syrup always reminds me of the fall. It certainly has a warm, rich autumnal flavor. This book is a nice compilation of recipes both savory and sweet, and has some cool anecdotes about growing up during mapling season. I was interested in the history of maple sugar, and the author does touch on it, but I would've loved something a bit more extensive. The images are beautiful and catch the eye. The book has a nice layout, although the printed pages have a slight odor.

I liked the idea of using maple syrup to sweeten cocoa, and I'm going to try that. I have purchased this book in Kindle and know I will enjoy making recipes from it.

I'm a busy home school mom of four--three of them in high school. While I love to cook, with this crazy life sometimes I get a bit lazy about some the little things in cooking--little touches that make the difference between a good dish and a great dish. This cookbook has just changed that. I was in the mood for something sweet, so I decided to try the Maple Walnut Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Normally I wouldn't bother with toasting the walnuts, but I wanted to follow the recipe as completely as I could, so I toasted the walnuts in a pan before mixing the cookies. Wow! It's such a little thing, but between toasting the nuts and adding the maple syrup (I didn't have maple sugar, so I used regular sugar with a generous dollop of maple syrup), they were amazing!! They were a huge hit with my family and moved this cookbook to my "hang onto and cook from often" shelf.

You might think a cookbook on maple syrup would be just desserts, but there are plenty of savory dishes as well. I'm making Maple Glazed Carrots as a side dish with supper tonight. We love baked beans around here so the Sap Baked Beans are on my list to make soon as are the Maple Spiced Pecans. They will go well with our snacky supper we usually do for Thanksgiving night and Christmas Eve.

If you like maple syrup at all, this is a great cookbook for you! Some great history, how-to's for tapping your own sugar maples should you have any, a guide to grades of syrup and so forth just add to the cookbook. I highly recommend it!

I received a copy of this cookbook from Quirk Books for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a beautiful and practical recipe book with a sweet theme in pure maple syrup. In addition to the 100 sweet and savory recipes in the book, it also has a nice introduction to the history, harvesting, science, benefits and favor of maple syrup. It is an interesting read. There is much more to it than just a topping you pour on top of your pancake.

The book features 100 recipes in the following categories: Breakfasts, Drinks and Appetizers, Soups, Side Dishes and Salads , Main Courses and Desserts. Each recipe takes up one single page and has a clear an clean layout - title and description, number of servings made, active time and total time, and followed by a list of ingredients in the left column and the preparation steps in the right column. At a glance, you can find how work and ingredients are involved, which really helps you choose the right recipe for the situation.

I found the recipes are generally down to earth and easy to follow. They are not overly complicated and often use the common ingredients found in the house or readily available in most grocery stores. Besides the recipes, the book also has a small, useful section on references, including knife skills, pantry notes and metric conversion.

Overall, this is a beautiful, themed recipe book bound in hardcover. It's filled with gorgeous photographs and practical recipes in a clear and clean layout. I'm glad that I am able to add this to my cookbook collection.
