Its difficult to understand this clock if you haven't seen it run, so here you go. When we first got it, it was jerky and neither ran evenly, correctly, nor quietly. A bit of inspection showed a wire from a battery was interfering with one of the gears. Moving that down, out of the way, has completely solved that problem. It now runs smoothly, correctly, and quietly.

The wire problem does highlight the only drawback, which is that the outer rider gears are being driven by the motor that drives the hands. So if something gets shoved up against it to block the outer gears, the clock will not tell time correctly. It also makes a click-click noise when this happens, so I've always noticed, but it could easily happen that you didn't.

Bought for my Asperger's son since he is really into motion and gears. He seems to like it. First, it's much bigger than I expected, about the diameter of a soccer ball and close to 3 inches wide. It's a bit on the bulky size, so make sure you have room for it. Like I noted earlier, the clock was larger than I expected. Takes two C batteries. The actual gears are made of silver plastic, not metal. It is very quiet and the gears move pretty slow. You have to look closely to see them move. It actually is very neat to watch. It would be a conversation piece for an office. Looks just like the picture.

The only big con for me is that it's not made of metal and the silver plastic, although seems pretty durable, looks a little inexpensive. I think this clock would be worth about $20.00-$25.00 at most.

this is a great product if you want a cool looking clock. Being a mechanical engineer, I really liked this clock. Looks great in my garage. Its a bit noisy, so I would recommend not to have it in the living room (and that is why I rated it with 4 stars).

5.0 out of 5 stars Gear Clock Review, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Maple's Clock TCL06-333 Moving Gear Desktop Clock (Misc.)
This is a fun item, a work of kinetic art (which is why I bought it), but not a serious clock. All of the visible gears turn but they have no connection to the time, they simply turn, and that's ok with me. The actual time, rather than all the spinning gears, is kept by the central clock mechanism and it keeps time accurately. The plastic gears are held in place very simply with metal screws & rods between the 2 circular retaining rings, and disassembly is fairly easy. With some brass spray point it makes a very nice steampunk decoration. markf

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Clock!, January 5, 2012

You can get lost in this clock.I gave it to my faience because he likes steam punk. This clock moves with all of the gears. It is a quiet clock. However if it gets bumped it pauses for a few seconds to readjust. The only thing I would like to see is a different color. Baby bronze, like steam-punk gears.

Easy to read, every gear moves - not so fast it blurs, but fast enough so it's not hard to tell.

Lot's of fun for us gearheads. May do a little marker painting to make it even MORE visual. Be great as a kit to assemble.

This comes completely assembled, ready to go. Just add batteries and set time. Seems accurate too.

I bought this "Gear Clock" for my middle school science class during a "simple machines" unit. It's decorative and the kids love watching it. I am a bit disappointed that, for the price, it doesn't keep very accurate time and needs monitoring and adjusting, espcially after weekends/vacations.
