Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

There have been very few--if any--books devoted to maples, the genus acer. This truly comprehensive one is the result of 19 years of work by the scholar-authors. The largest section is a proposed revision of the genus, combined with a detailed description of hybrids and cultivars. Other chapters cover such subjects as the history of maple names, maple structure, native habitats and distribution, pests and diseases, propagation, paleobotany and evolution, and reproduction and taxonomy. The book will be of interest to botanists because of its taxonomic and nomenclatural data and its thorough (69-page) bibliography. There are 207 color photographs of significant species and cultivars, as well as 5 black-and-white photos and numerous line drawings. George Cohen

"This long-awaited masterwork has no peer. Virtually every species and named variety of maple known to horticulture is represented here ... An invaluable resource that could scarcely be surpassed."

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book; mediocre layout, April 2, 2010

This review is from: Maples of the World (Hardcover)
This is an excellent, authoritative book on maples; however, the layout is disappointing. All the color plates are lumped into two sections, rather than placed adjacent to relevant text. The result is very unsatisfying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be advised, November 12, 2011
By
Quijote (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maples of the World (Paperback)
This is an excellent reference on maples, but be advised that the paperback edition has no color plates, even though it says it does in the Contents. Don't be misled by the cover. Only the original hardbound edition has color plates. Priced as it is, it is very expensive for a book whose illustrations are minimally useful to the average gardener. Black and white photos in small sizes convey very little information.
