Real Harcourt music.,
By Erik Tjernlund (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maplewood / Early Sessions (Audio CD)
It's been a long time since I've become so excited of a new artist as I am of Harcourt. Saw him live here i Stockholm, Sweden, May 2001 and it was -- for the lack of a less abused word -- magical.Bought Maplewood a few days later and I have not played any other cd since. It's now June. Every review or article I read about Harcourt mentions Waits, Buckley and an assortment of other singer-songwriters, but I'm not sure that is entirely correct or fair. This is Ed. This is Harcourt. Personal, creative and beautiful music with great lyrics. Apple of my eye is the best song on the cd, but all of them are great. Yes. All of them. The only thing wrong with this release is that there are too few songs (only 6) on it, but I guess that implies hope for future records. Beautiful. Intense. Sincere. Buy it. Buy two.

Excellent release!,

Ed Harcourt is a masterful singer/songwriter who recorded this 6-tracks mini album in his home studio. On Maplewood he's crafted little, precious songs that are definitely woth a listen. As Amazon.co.uk states, you'll hear echoes of Tom Waits, Bono (the first time I listened to "Apple of my eye" I almost mistook the singer's voice for Bono's) and spaghetti western. The first songs reminds me of The Blue Nile but it's probably just a feel... Whatelse can I say? I wish it was a bit longer, after all he claims to have written hundreds of songs already.

this is one of the best album that i have ever been privilaged to hear. ed harcourt is a fresh voice in the modern crazyness of indie rock. there are a number of beautiful slow song that will relax and keep you calm. i am angered by the fact that harcourt has been completly ignored by the music world despite his blatent talent for writing singing performing ...... i hope sooner rather that later he will come into his own i mean good music can't be ignored for long?

What a Sleeper,

This review is from: Maplewood / Early Sessions (Audio CD)
Ed harcourt, the multi-instrumentalist versatile singer-songwriter from England has a great mini-album here but is somewhat of a sleeper. This music is one which grows upon you. It requires, almost insists that you listen to it carefully with heart and soul. Let it whirl around your consciousness and permeate your gray cells. Listen to it with friends, in the car, in the early hours, with a loved one. Ed Harcourt inevitably draws comparisons with others but I do not think it will be all that long before many others are measured against his standard. This recording is merely a beginning for what I believe will be a long and productive career. See for yourself. Try it..you'll like it. Great album.
