Book Description

March 1, 1999
Throughout his career, poet and art writer William Fox has addressed the concatenation of issues imbedded in the relationships between art, land, and history. Nevada's vast open spaces have long inspired complex responses from a population largely shaped by European sensibilities toward land and its uses-responses ranging from the romantic to the deadly. In Mapping the Empty, Fox considers how eight of the state's most distinguished and innovative contemporary artists have responded to the harsh, enigmatic landscapes of the Great Basin and how, through their work, they have expressed and helped to define the West.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at art, artists and the landscape, April 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Mapping The Empty: Eight Artists And Nevada (Hardcover)
This is a well written look at 8 artists in Nevada. Most interesting is how these artists and their work reflects and interacts with the desert landscape in a variety of ways. The artists respond in a variety of ways using abstraction, collage, installation and mixed media. The book is well illustrated and shows examples of the artists' work. Fox has an obvious affection for the artists in this book and strikes a tone that is balanced and enthusiastic. It is an interesting look at 8 specific artists but also delves into the creative process, culture in the Western US and how the landscape impacts all of that. Definitely worth the time!
