The fact that the other reviewer misunderstood the nature of this book does not make it a bad book, it simply is a statement of how unclear the reviewer was about the provocative nature of this truly remarkable book. The book is certainly not vulgar, provocative yes, but vulgar no. There are no words in this book that anyone exposed to modern culture will not hear on numerous occasions. The previous puritanical review should be completely ignored. It truly is a remarkable book that will make you rethink the world. In its pages is woven an idiosyncratic but mesmerizing picture of our world from a social, cultural, political and technological standpoint that will reshape how you view our planet. It is highly recommended - FIVE STARS - for opening minds, destroying preconceptions and presenting enlightening new views. I highly recommend the closed minded stay away. I encourage those who are seeking new insights buy this book.

Mapping is a very contemporary dialogue in the arts, this give a very good grounding in those working within the science, sociology and artistic communities which use the term mapping.

I purchased this book because I am familiar with Obrist's work in the art field and have an obsession with maps and obscure cartography. If you don't read art books or dislike modern art, deriding it as pretentious, of course you will find this alternative cartography offensive. let's be honest, if you can't see an artistic metaphor in reinterpreting how we map things, then you probably shouldn't buy a book that's not full of literal maps. Dealing with the disparity in these maps compared to the expectations of an atlas is the shallowest level of critique; this is like the maps of a flaneur, an unattached, intellectual man wandering the night. It is cafe culture. If you enjoy maps, you probably enjoy creative merit. The scrawled maps of a "schizophrenic artist," as one low rated review on this site so calls it, is a pretty cool, accidental compliment. I much enjoyed the Raqs Media Collective's (an outfit of three Indian artists who fabricate and design globally conscious art) commentary on worldwide resource competition. This book is jam-packed with good work from good artists. Some people seem bothered that someone would make an art book that said something that made them uncomfortable. That is flattery for the book, and a better review than I could ever give.

I saw a write up for this book in Entertainment Weekly and the sample that they showed looked really cool. My husband loves maps and geography, so I purchased it with him in mind. While the book itself is cool, it isn't really maps of the world. Let me explain by citing some examples. There is a section called the Cultural Map of Cultural Intervention. There is another called the Speciation of Religion. This is all very interesting, but if you are looking for an atlas of the continents, you may be disappointed.
My husband assures me that he enjoys reading this book, and it is pretty cool, just not what I originally had pictured.
