Book Description

Do maps accurately and objectively present the information we expect them to portray, or are they instead colored by the political purposes of their makers? In this lively and well-illustrated book, Jeremy Black investigates this dangerous territory, arguing persuasively that the supposed "objectivity" of the map-making and map-using process cannot be divorced from aspects of the politics of representation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Reaktion Books has been producing ... closely argued and beautifully printed interrogations of the painting, the photograph, and the map. Black brings cartography within this archaeology, exploring in a series of telling and engaging anecdotes the hidden purposes and aesthetics of what seems, on the 2D surface, the most objective of represenatations. The Herald, Glasgow ... examines the technical and interpretative challenges that face cartographers and their ultimate customers ... excellent The Times Literary Supplement --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great review of maps and their influence by and on politics, December 1, 2004

This review is from: Maps and Politics (Paperback)
This is a great addition to the discussion on maps as a tool or politics and a summary of previous works in the area. The writing style is is not hyperbolic like many radical theory types in the field yet still carries an energy that makes for easy reading. The collection of maps supplements the volume well.
