5.0 out of 5 stars Definitivamente El Mejor, October 31, 2003

5.0 out of 5 stars a pyschedelic spanish rock beatlesque album!!!, February 8, 2002
This review is from: Maquillaje (Audio CD)
that summarizes this album which has been playing over and over in my headphones, in my car...wherever i go....any beatlefan will be pleased to hear that the beatles legacy still lives strong in the veins of latin rock...the opening track is worth the price of admission alone..."para siempre" opens up with a feel of "i am the walrus" and harrison's "when we was fab"....the track even features Ringo style drumming throughout...i have yet to tire of this track which ends in an exquisite mellotron played hauntingly to drums that seem to slug it out with an eerie rainy feel...the next track "asi es" carries the beatlesque onward with interesting turns...."de afuera hacia adentro" is a great rolling along sixties style track with vocals bordering with a beach boys feel...the next one will have riffs of thebeatles "because' as well beatlesque harmonies strongly to the fore...then comes an experiemental interludio..."ligero como el viento" is a good track, but not as powerful as the opening tracks...."bien o mal" opens promisingly, but extends it's we;come almost at ten minutes...."por el suelo..." is not memorable, but the album picks up with "Carros al cielo", that has almost a reggae feel to it..."sin explicacion" has dreamy lyrics...."interludio 2" almost reminded me of harrison's "electronic sound" upon it's opening, but has more in comon with mccartney's "liverpool sound collage".."dentro de un mensaje" sounds lennonesque...a fitting end to an album that could have been zurdok's sublimal tribute to the fabs right at the time of harrison's untimely passing...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great rock album, and in Spanish!, February 5, 2006

A really good album from start to finish, defenetly one of my favorite albums of all time, along with Zurdok's previews work "Hombre Sintetizador" Zurdok is defetenly one creative band who, with "Maquillaje", offers Spanish speaking fans something they would expect from a British band.

5.0 out of 5 stars buenisimo, October 23, 2001
This review is from: Maquillaje (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mexican Rock Band, October 11, 2001
By

It was last year when a friend of mine told me went to a Zurdok show in LA. I bought the album "Hombre Sintetizador" without ever hearing it.
I just loved it. I had the chance to get "Maquillaje" in Mexico City as soon as it hit the stores.
All songs have an spiritual content that's very dificult to get in contemporary rock music. "De afuera hacia adentro" is one of their best lyrics, only competing with "Asi Es". If you like british and experimental rock music you'll like "Zurdok - Maquillaje". If spanish is not your languaje, the music will take you out anyhow.
One of the best albums I've gotten this year, besides RadioHead and SantaSabina.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Pop album.....as it was meant to be., September 13, 2001
This review is from: Maquillaje (Audio CD)
Zurdok has managed to accomplish one of the strangest goals for Spanish rock since it was created back in the late 70's; when Latin-American artists actually translated American rock hits to Spanish. This band has actually created a sound of their own....one thing rare in this times, 40 years later after a huge contribution to music by the Beatles, the beach boys and other great bands it's hard to find music that intense.
We've heard great artists at different times in history, it's sad to see that art it's now at days limited to those people who speak English and understand it.
Imagine how hard it was for these kids to understand a language different from their own, figure out the music, the intention of the lyrics and then actually understand it and have a great influence by it.
Take it as a challenge........"the music it's great.....but I don't understand what the heck they're saying!".......that was familiar thing when I was a little kid, figuring out the Beatles.
Figure out Zurdok.......you're missing something; maquillaje it's one fine album filled with intelligent music.......
This it's the best pop album.....as it was meant to be, said Chetes once to me, I believe he was right.
Challenge the music itself without the lyrics, the melodies....all the string arrangements, great guitars.....great drums, all together to create a experimental rock band using all the capacity of their brains to play as many instruments as possible without overwhelming the song........hard to find at this days.

5.0 out of 5 stars exelente musica regia, July 21, 2001

Excelent Record!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better and better, July 12, 2001
By
Robert Rojas "robertrojas" (St. Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Maquillaje (Audio CD)
I just happen to find their last album Hombre Sintetizador and became a fanatic of this band after hearing it. Maquillaje tops it. In the process of their last two albums they lost their lead vocalist and keyboard player. I can't tell, Chetes has a very distinct voice that carries the melody of the song. I love very melodic music, a song like "Asi Es" just leaving me humming the tune all day. "Dentro de un mensaje" is one of the best arranged songs I have ever heard. The only song I have any complaint about is "Bien o Mal" that has a keyboard solo at the end that goes on about 2 minutes too long. Its a shame audiences in the US will never get to hear such a good record. If you like bands like XTC or singers like Robbie Williams this is right for you. There is so much good rock music coming out of Latin America, Zurdok is one of the best if not the best, O.K Los Aterciopelados and Cafe Tacuba has to be in their too!
UPDATE: Another band that broke up, although Chetes the main songwriter for Zurdok is coming out with another band called Vaquero
