5.0 out of 5 stars So, you want to know what it takes to raise a pooch???
This is a book that is a godsend for novice and veteran dog lovers alike. "Illustrated" is an understatement; for each page combines great photos combined with informative text that will make the "teaching" and "learning" experience for all parties involved successful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great
This book is easy to read and provides great instruction for various points in training a new puppy. My only "beef" with the book is that, like the DK books, it puts information in pictorial form and in paragraph form in each section, but unlike DK, the information provided is identical in the two areas. For me, I may start out reading the pictorial description, but if...

5.0 out of 5 stars So, you want to know what it takes to raise a pooch???, June 5, 2005
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
This is a book that is a godsend for novice and veteran dog lovers alike. "Illustrated" is an understatement; for each page combines great photos combined with informative text that will make the "teaching" and "learning" experience for all parties involved successful.

Stretching over eleven chapters, the book is, obviously, a labor of love by the publishers/editors that have an affinity for our four-legged friends. No stone is left unturned, covering topics from "getting started" to "socialization" to "commands" to "working with basic behaviors". In addition to the aforementioned, the book also provides games and tricks that an owner/friend can play with his/her dog.

Another bonus is found in the last chapter, wherein recipes for dog treats are given, along with an insightful glossary of terms.

Two smile-inducing highlights are found in the first pages of the book: two pages devoted to the animal "models" and their owners, along with an eight-page introduction to dog breeds in their respective classes.

The book gets FIVE big PAWS from this reader!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful training guide for training humans and dogs!, May 26, 2006
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
I am a dog/human training instructor at K9Kapers Dog Training in Shelton, WA.After reviewing this book and sharing with other trainers, I have started using it in my Basic Manners 1 & 2 classes, and my Canine Good Citizen classes. The feed back from my students has been really great. The book has focused on positive training and socialization and by giving assignments to read, it allows us to have more time to discuss and answer questions during class. The photographs are very well done and help to show the meaning of the written text. Great job Maran!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
This book is easy to read and provides great instruction for various points in training a new puppy. My only "beef" with the book is that, like the DK books, it puts information in pictorial form and in paragraph form in each section, but unlike DK, the information provided is identical in the two areas. For me, I may start out reading the pictorial description, but if I've then decided to read more in the paragraph portion, I'm looking for more indepth info or to read something different. It isn't helpful to have the same exact words written two times on each page. I actually preferred the "Keep it Simple Series"--puppy training book from DK that I purchased (unfortunately loaned out and not returned) when we got our other dog 4 years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideas for Every Situation, May 26, 2006
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
Maran Illustrated Dog Training explores a full range of situations, everything from what to do when you first adopt a puppy to how to train your dog to accept a new pet or even adapt to having a new baby in the house. Through full-color pictures on every page, the journey is as visual as it is intellectual.

Pictures flow across the pages with explanations below the pictures explaining the activities. Above the pictures helpful advice explains commands, positive training methods, housetraining, socialization, fun games, cool tricks and problem behaviors.

Fun sections on tricks and dog treat recipes make this book not only practical, but playful too.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent training tool for you and your dog., March 21, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
I am a dog obedience instructor. In my classes, I give out the Maran Illustrated Dog Training book to all my Puppy Kindergarten, Basic Manners 1 and Basic Manners 2 owner/dog teams of students. Some people learn best by reading, some by hearing and some by doing. This book is a great aid in helping those who benefit from the reading side of learning. The numerous photographs are very well done and the text is understandable. I had asked an English teacher and 4 other trainers for their input on this book before I used it as a textbook. The Maran's have zeroed in on the positive and gentle ways of obtaining desired behaviors from our dogs. I recommend it to anyone looking to train their furry family member to be a good citizen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Training Book Out There!!!, February 1, 2006
By
Animaluver (Wisconsin, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
I am only 15 years old and I am going to be a 4-H club dog leader, so I enjoy reading books about dogs. I have literally read over 75 dog books and this is the best one I have ever read. The many illustrations are good, and the book is very easy to understand. It covers every aspect of owning a dog from how to pick a day care, to how to socialize your dog, to basic tricks and training, to advanced tricks and training. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in training dogs or interested even in just learning about dogs. If you only get one dog training book, it is well worth the money to get this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent training book, July 31, 2006
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
The techniques are up-to-date and positive -no punishment. The photos are clear and helpful. I recommend this book to all of our dog adopters, especially those that I don't think will read a whole book. Reading this book front to back is best but you can skip a chapter and still get excellent information and help on training your dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding -- Pictures Paint Many Thousands of Words, June 27, 2007
This review is from: Maran Illustrated Dog Training (Paperback)
As a certified pet dog trainer (CPDT), I'm always looking for better dog training books for pet owners. Unfortunately, most are cheaply produced and lack appealing, clear layout, much less beautiful, detailed photographs. These logically progressed serial photos that show movement are brilliant -- they show at a glance what takes too many words to say. Of course, the photos wouldn't matter if they got the science of animal training wrong, a.k.a. learning theory. But they got it all right! This is a gem, a one-of-a-kind resource in dog training publications today. It's now the first book I recommend and give as gifts to clients, friends and family.
