Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The CD5004 marries convenience and flexibility with time-honored audio engineering techniques in an exceptional audio source whose performance belies its affordable price. Whatever your musical preference the CD5004 stands ready to reproduce all the power and detail that bring great performances to life.

High Performance Audio High quality film capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response. The CD5004 utilizes our Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module, or HDAM, at critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal transfer from one stage to another. The D/A converters themselves come from Cirrus Logic. Yes, we’ve used them before but only in far more expensive products such as our THX-certified DV8400 DVD player; so we know they’re good. In fact, they’re capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and 24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals) without losing their composure. You might think they’re a bit of overkill for CD reproduction. But you’ll know better once you hear the CD5004. For private listening, a current-buffer headphone amplifier is included for extraordinary sound quality. It’s no secret that audiophiles want everything just as it was recorded. If you’re of that persuasion, you’ll really appreciate the CD5004’s selectable Audio EX mode. Audio EX bypasses the pitch control, mutes the digital output, and shuts the FL display off completely. With those three potential noise sources eliminated, you’ll be able to hear everything just as the artists intended.

Connections Connecting the CD5004 to the rest of your system is easy, even if you choose high performance cables. For one thing, the gold-plated output terminals are widely spaced so they won’t cramp heavy duty connectors. And the terminals are chassis-mounted so they’ll take the strain of audiophile interconnects. For custom installation demands, the CD5004 has a detachable AC cord and a flasher input jack for remote control ease.

Convenience You’ll also be interested to know that the CD5004 plays more than just conventional CDs. It’s ready for CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 and WMA files, too. So you can listen to your favorite playlists with full CD convenience. In addition to all the information you need to locate and enjoy your favorite passages, the high density fluorescent display also shows CD Text. Simply press the remote’s TEXT button to see the album title, track title, artist and composer name, etc. If you’re a musician, the word “tuning” probably causes a grimace. That’s because it’s often very difficult to play along with a disc because of pitch differences between it and an instrument. The CD5004 offers an easy solution to that dilemma, a pitch adjustment that “retunes” the disc so you don’t have to retune your guitar or anything else you’re playing! And this pitch adjustment is perfect for slowing down those hard-to-learn riffs that can make or break a performance. Don’t forget the CD5004’s Quick Replay feature either. Just push a remote control button and the CD5004 instantly “backs up” anywhere from 5 to 60 seconds (your choice) and begins playing again. So if you didn’t catch that riff the first time, you can quickly hear it again.

Product Description

The CD5004 plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs – even those containing MP3 and WMA music files in addition to CD-standard PCM tracks. It also reads CD Text data from encoded discs, displaying tagged MP3 and WMA data to help identify the disc and its contents more accurately. Plus it incorporates Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A Converters for spectacular sound quality that remains constant regardless of its environment and audiophile-grade analog audio circuits.

The construction is well made and it looks very nice.

The 5004 has a distinctive sound which is noticeably more dynamic, detailed, and transparent than I am used to hearing even in showrooms.

Let me start by saying that I am more of an analogue fan (I like the warm natural sound of lps). I also play bass so I like systems which can reproduce this instrument well.
I needed to replace a Carver 490t which after 20 years of use was starting to fail. I wanted something that sounded pretty good and that the kids could abuse.
This unit fits the bill. The Marantz CD5004 does not quite compare with my previous CD which has tubes and which was an exceptional unit for it era. I must say it however comes pretty close. The Carver was $1,200 when I bought it so I did not expect the Marantz could match it and it does not. Doing a side by side test reveals that the Carver is more musical and that it offers a larger sound stage. Its highs are also more natural and less sizzling. The bass is richer and more profound. The overall tone is warmer and more musical. All this is easy to notice with jazz or classical music. When it comes to rock and dance music, the Marantz does quite well because it actually beats the Carver for dynamics. The CD5004 is a hard hitting unit without being fatiguing to the ear. Doing a blind listening test, I could easily sort the Marantz from the Carver with jazz but not with rock.
I guess it speaks volume for Marantz that a $350 unit would come close to a $1,200 unit that was well rated for its era. Note also that the differences I describe can be heard if you pay attention and if you listen to this CD player on a good system. I tend to believe that anybody short of an audiophile would be quite satisfied with this CD player. It offers an amazing value for its price.
I added this review because there is very little written on this CD player.

I've had the player a little over two weeks now and each time I play a CD for the first time with it I appreciate it more and more. With this grade of D/A converter you of course expect natural high end and great overall imaging, but the thing that continues to impress me the most is the fullness of the center low frequency image. It's tight and full and doesn't waver at different frequencies. I listen to many different types of music and this player brings out the best (and the worst) of all those recordings.
I highly recommend this product for anyone who has a good sized collection of standard CDA's.

I needed a CD player with headphone capability, but more quality and refinement of sound than the excellent $108 Teac CD-P1260. In the $300 to $500 price range there is no competition, so I decided to try this Marantz CD-5004 (a recent upgrade of the CD-5003). It is a beautifully operating machine with a more refined sound than I had previously heard. The high degree of resolution results in sound that is more detailed and thus more sensuously beautiful and true to the original sound than I thought CD was capable of. And the headphone output using AKG K701 phones is stunning. Unless you want to spend a lot more, or get involved with external headphone amplifiers or preamps with headphone jacks, this beautifully operating player is my recommendation. The supplied manual (in English, French and Spanish) is clear and complete.

OMG! OMG! I'd been listening to distortion all these years and had thought that it was music. This is an exceptional instrument which won't become obsolete in the near future. Every CD I've played with it has surprised me with details I hadn't imagined were there before, but its strong suit is presence. The mid range is pure and defined to an extent that I didn't think was possible in a unit costing less than $400. In short, this player is an outstanding value!

Update, November 2012: I still love it!

I have owned and really enjoyed the Onkyo cd 7030 cd player for about eight months. Which doesn't mean I haven't entertained an upgrade. I whittled it down to the Marantz 5004, and wondered if the improvements (if any) would justify an additional $350 outlay!

Entered my local Best Buy store, where I was able to talk them out of a demo unit for a measly $210. Now, I said, let's get it home, crank it up, break it in for 100 hours or so, and see if I can justify the purchase.

It did sound pretty good out of the box, but my Onkyo had REALLY improved after appropriate burn-in, so I was patient. Almost anything new wants to make itself sound better than its predecessor. I looked online to try to find a good comparison between these players. I found only one, and these guys heard no difference.

I have several classical cds with duplicates, so I dutifully set up the two players to play in sync (and then with a 5 sec. delay) to compare.I then reversed the discs, in case one of the two was a remaster.

At this point, let me say that I always listen in surround mode, DTS 96kz NEO matrixed.

My associated equipment is as follows:- MIRAGE L/R front OMD-5 sats, center OMD C-1, back channels OS-3 sats, plus SW-1 sub., DENON 5-channel receiver.

On most of my duplicate discs, the differences were small, almost insignificant. I finally put on my Bruckner 9 by Guilini/VPO on DGG, Movement 3. I played it sequentially on each player. On the Marantz, there was more impact and a taller sound stage with more spacial info. Did this several times. Definitely more and deeper bass and more low level detail.
