These are only first impressions of this amp and I will update this review later if necessary. Marantz has actually replaced the 6004 with a newer model, the 6005 which has digital inputs but the 6004 continues to be readily available. It can be had now for about $200 less than its previous price and at $399 it's a real steal.

First let me address the assembled in China issue. Yes I would have preferred that it had been assembled in Japan, but its build quality seems excellent to me and I am basing my review upon my hands on impressions of the unit without prejudging it just because it was assembled in China.

It's rated at 45 WPC into 8 ohms which doesn't seem like much but it drives my less than efficient vintage ESS HD1500 speakers without missing a beat. Having the volume knob at 11:00 produces ear shattering volume with no noticeable distortion so I am quite pleased with its power. And remember that its power is rated with 0.08% THD which is an honest power rating. Other manufacturers may rate an amp at 100 WPC with 1% THD, but don't be fooled by that. 100 watts with 1% distortion is arguably less power than 45 watts with .08% distortion. I suspect that this amp will provide sufficient clean power for the vast majority of users.

Its sound is very mellow and laid back and lacks the harshness that some amps in this price range may be plagued with. I actually had to adjust the brilliance controls on my speakers back to a neutral position. I had them turned down to accommodate my old Onkyo amp. I have it connected to an inexpensive Pioneer CD player, my Directv satellite receiver, a bluray player and my PC via a Fiio E10 DAC and I have to say that it sounds excellent with any of those sources.

For under $600 no integrated amp. is perfect. It has adequate power, good tonality and a functional remote. Far better than a basic stereo receiver and IMHO not far off my Rotel integrated which is about 5 years old, which sounds different, not necessarily better. Recently rated product of the year by a British Journal and a winner at its price. Build quality seems good too. A slight haze or lack of clarity and recent comparison to Cambridge Azur 350 and 550 integrated amp. make the 5th star a question for debate, they are different.

Excellent for a solid-state amp, probably one of the very best around. Very clean sound. However, I'm about to take the leap into tube amps and will see if one of them can surpass this top-drawer stereo amp. If not, I'll probably move up to the PM8004 version of this line, since that amp has a little more power and a "mid" control as well as the standard bass and treble.

By the way, I also tried a Harman Kardon 3490 amp. This Marantz has a little clearer, cleaner sound with more depth and precise imaging of the instruments in the soundstage. The Harmon created a little more of a wall of sound without the separation in space of the different instruments. The differences were subtle however, and the Harmon is also a very good amp.

Plenty of power to drive my speakers. Wonderfully clear sound. A beautiful piece that can sit prominently in a living room. Excellent remote control. I've been with Marantz for many years and have always been satisfied.

I'm a pragmatic audiophile driving 2 paradigm monitor 7's with this. Stereo output from fanless HTPC via Asus Xonar sound card ASUS PCI-Express x1 Sound Card XONAR ESSENCE STX/90-YAA0C0-0UAN00Z. Like the source direct feature and auto shut-off.

I am not an audiophile, but like to hear music in clear natural sound rather than with artificially boosted bass or treble settings. I was leaning towards the PM5004 which I listened to at a local stereo store and liked, but was able to get this at the same price from a reputed dealer on the web.

I appreciate that this amp does what it says and only what it says. There are no gimmicks or techie bells and whistles on this - just a straight forward quality amplifier. I am driving a pair of Definitive Technology BP6 speakers with this amp and it does a wonderful job. There is a Source Direct mode on the amp, but it doesn't sound nice at my listening volume, and requires the use of the Loudness button which I don't mind.

Also, there is a wonderful phono section which makes listening to LP's a pleasure. I use a Pioneer PL600 turntable with a Sure MM cartridge. The volume needs to be cranked up to 40%-50% when using the phono input, but it is crystal clear and there's no audible amplifier noise.

There are two recording loops, but I can't comment on those as I only use a CD player and turntable on this.

I have 2. One of them is used only to listen to CDs on headphones and the sound is incredible with high end Sennheisers. The other one is used to play music thru my top of the line Polk speakers. I could buy more expensive amps, but short of some of the handmade ones from Germany which are a significant multiple of the cost of the 6004, I think its a waste of money. Someone with a better ear may disagree.

I read several glowing reviews about this amp before purchasing to replace a old Luxman tube/hybrid amp I've had since the late 1980's. After a week of 24 hour burn in, I'm happy to report the reviews are all correct. Wonderful sound. Detailed and dynamic. The perfect match from my stand-mounted B+W CD1se's. The remote control was a nice (and unexpected) touch. The treble control set at 15k is perfect for adding (or subtracting) "air". The appearance (from a distance) is handsome in a smart (but powerful) way.

My rating stops at only 4 stars for two reasons ...

First, the knobs/interface fall short of the sonic output. Compared to the old school amp it replaced, the modern Marantz's feel cheap -- the volume and tone controls in particular. You want a sensual reward when you reach for the volume control, but the Marantz seems to say, "don't touch me too long or too hard because I might break." Saul Marantz is probably turning in his grave, as the components with his name used to have such a weighty appearance and feel. Anyone remember turning the thumbwheel radio tuning control of a legacy Marantz receiver? You won't get anything like that feel here.

Second, a line-level subwoofer output (and some limited management interface) would really help this unit integrate into more 21st century loudspeaker arrangements. To the point, I'd love to purchase a second PM-6004 for a bedroom system, but no subwoofer out would complicate the wiring arrangement and I prefer not to go there.

That's it -- 2 grips (one that prevents a second purchase). The Yamaha A-S500 will probably get that second assignment (has subwoofer out)
