Designed to be the ideal companion to the Marantz CD6005 CD player, the PM6005 Amplifier is a newly engineered version of the award-winning PM6004. In addition to handling a wide range of analog audio sources, the PM6005 features digital audio compatibility for direct connection to your favorite digital audio sources. Marantz HDAM discrete-circuit technology provides wide frequency response and dynamic range, while the amplifier's full transistors deliver increased power output. The high-capacity, shielded toroidal transformer provides noise-free power. The analog audio connectors, the coaxial digital audio input, and the headphone jack are all gold plated for optimum signal transfer.

For the aspiring audiophile, however, Marantz has just the thing. The PM6005 gives me a taste of the golden-eared sonics from the deeper end of the audio pool. It’s gratifying to hear an amplifier that embraces a musician’s sensitivity to sound. The PM6005 is smooth at every volume. It never sounds harsh, tinny, or clinical. Give it speakers and source components of comparable quality, and it glows.
The PM6005 also allows me to dip my toe into the arcane rituals of hardcore audiophiles. For example, it’s designed to support bi-wired speakers. Does this truly improve the sound? Damned if I know. But since my speakers (KEF Q300) can be bi-wired, then bi-wired they shall be! Now I can brag that I have a bi-wired audio system, taking care to discreetly change the subject in the presence of anyone who actually comprehends audio equipment. By the way, if you do bi-wire your speakers, be sure to activate both the speaker A and speaker B buttons. The user manual doesn’t tell you this. It assumes, I guess, that most users are smarter than me. (I find that vaguely insulting.)
Those accustomed to less refined audio equipment may find the bass and treble controls puzzling. Twirling these has only a slight effect on the sound. Bear in mind that audiophiles have a thing about tone controls. They despise them.Read more ›
I have utilized the Phono Stage with a ProJect Carbon Debut, MusicHall MMF7.1, and my trusty Technics 1210M5G. Cartridges used: AT440mla, Ortofon Red & Black, MusicHall Mojo (aka Ortofon 540mkII). All I can say is this phone stage with the Marantz in "Source Direct" mode really gets the job done. If you don't want to mess with extra/external boxes acting as the Phono Stage- look no further.
[UPDATE 3/4/14] - Found the perfect combo. I am running a Denon DL-110 (High Output Moving Coil) Cartridge with the Marantz phono stage. WORKS PERFECT, and is the best sounding in my use case.
The DAC - works perfect with Airplay on (Apple Airport Express or Apple TV) to stream from Apple devices and iTunes. (FYI: You can utilize BOTH an Optical & CoAxial Digital input. Think of it as 2 Digital inputs not as one-or-the-other.)
[UPDATE 3/4/14] Added a NuForce U192S to my Macbook Pro to send over 192/24 HDTracks to the Marantz DAC capable of 192/24. WORKS PEFECT!
Source Direct Mode is nice, in addition to an old school Loudness button for low volume listening as I do in my Office.
CONS: (Why it loses 1 star)
-Volume Knob. First of all this thing has a blue LED for just about every thing-- EXCEPT on the volume knob! I am sitting 5' away from it and I can BARLEY discern it is currently at 9 o'clock. -or- If using the (touchy) remote to control the volume you can't see it's movement/position.
-Source Selector Knob. I like this concept, but it is too vague.Read more ›
I have been into intro-intermediate+ level audiophile gear for about 15 years now.
As a young adult, living in an apartment, I am careful about picking equipment based on utility, performance, size, esthetics, reliability and price.
Although I have owned several tube amplifiers and love the sound, their warm up and reliability is suspect at best.
I purchased this amplifier because:
1. moderate sized form factor
2. sleek esthetics
3. excellent DAC, optical input
4. discrete headphone
5. warm sound into 4/8/16 ohms
6. low heat and power usage
The only con is that it does not have a usb input. Otherwise, this unit is near flawless at its pricepoint.
I have them driving a set of Zu Audio Soul Superfly (16 ohms, 101db) and at 40% volume I am rattling the walls.
Maybe I would rather have a powerful tube amplifier for these speakers, but for its hassle free operation, and utility, this amplifier cant be beat around the 700$ price range.
If you are shopping this amplifier, you may be looking at peachtree, onkyo, and yamaha integrated stereo amplifiers from 500-100$. I've owned them most, and this is by far the best.
PM6005 on the other hand is driving my set of speakers beautifully. It feels as if the speakers were hungry for power and the marantz PM6005 feeds them with enough power to make my speakers sound so good. The Digital input (optical) is connected to Apple TV and produces unbelievable sound.
yes I know PM6005 doesn't have blue tooth and USB inputs. But for me, airplay was the most used case and it worked for me.
I you are choosing between NAD D3020 and Marantz PM6005. Here is my opinion
Buy PM6005 if
1) You want to drive a floorstander for your home entertainment system.
2) You can live without Bluetooth and USB inputs. It does have a built in DAC, you can either connect it to your AppleTV/Roku or you can use Toslink connector to feed from macBook.
Buy NAD D3020 if
1) You want to set up a small Stereo setup for your Laptop / PC using a bookshelf speakers
2) You want a small and light system that sounds awesome. It is an excellent headphone amp.
