I purchased the Marantz to replace an old Sony ES receiver. I purchased this receiver to drive My new Martin Logan Source electostats . I also us three Martin Logan Encore tf for my center and surround speakers. All these Martin Logans are 4OHM speakers. The Marantz has no problem at all delivering the goods. The Marantz SR5006 shows no sign what so ever of over heating. And we crank it. Listening to music or cranking up the Home Theater. The set up menu is great. I have no idea what more you would want out of an on screan set up. Marantz SR5006 reproduces music like no other. Not only that the Marantz has a very high end look to it. While shoping for this receiver I noticed nothing looks like the Marantz, as where all other receivers look the same. The apple apps are just fine as well. I have a friend with a Pioneer Elite ($1,800.00) and all he ever says is how there app stinks. The air play feature is sweet as well. Trust me when I tell you , you can not go wrong with the Marantz SR5006 receiver. Do the research , pound for pound, price for price the Marantz will out last, out perform all others..

This is the nicest receiver I have ever owned. I'll lead with the compliments then add some warnings at the bottom.

The sound from this receiver is great and Marantz gave it elegant design, with only two knobs, one row of buttons, and a small "porthole" LCD on the front. It projects a sort of confidence, "I don't need to show off with rows of glowing controls; it's all under the hood." That said, the design entails certain compromises -- some aspects of the receiver are difficult to configure unless it is attached to a TV by HDMI. If you don't plan to connect it to a screen in that way, this probably isn't a good choice for you. The same holds for debugging; if it doesn't do what you expect, you're going to have a hard time figuring out what's wrong without any sort of diagnostic output on the unit itself.

However, if you do plan to connect it to a screen via HDMI, you're home free. It connects to audio sources via component cables, TOS-link, HDMI, ethernet, USB and bluetooth (with RX101 adapter, not included). It connects to video sources via HDMI and component cables. You can mix and match these however you want -- any audio source through the speakers in conjunction with any video image on the screen. It can send two different audio streams to different sets of speakers, if you are watching TV in one room and somebody wants to listen to music in another. It comes with a microphone, which it can use in self-configuration to optimize its setting for the room in which it is placed. It has Airplay, which allows it to play music from iTunes over the local network, and it can connect directly to some internet radio channels, pandora, and a couple of other online music services I don't use.

This is my first receiver that I have ever owned, but by far not the first I have ever used or had experience with. I know some people complain about the porthole design, but it is what it is. It is there for a minimalist design and marantz designed the receiver to function mainly through the GUI. I think this receiver is beautiful, clean, and simple looking. You aren't overwhelmed with buttons and a super huge screen detailing every single little thing in about 4 size font.

The other complaint is that the GUI looks awful. As long as you are hooked up through HDMI, as another reviewer noted, you are home free. The menus are fairly simple and IMO it is far simpler to set up than other receivers. Also, it should be noted that there is also an internet GUI. As long as your receiver is hooked up to the internet and you have a computer with internet connection you can get the IP address and there is a pretty polished web GUI. For all those who posted bad reviews because of the GUI they probably didn't know this or never tried it because it is easy to use and works exceptionally well.

Now to the receiver itself. I got mine open for about $500 open box, which was an amazing deal and allowed me to get a brand new receiver for a nice discount. It was easy to set up and pretty self explanatory. I also liked the fact that it came with a CD that contained the user manual. I feel that this is important because instead of scrambling through the booklet that is also included to find what you are looking for you can quickly search the digital booklet and it makes finding features or setup help a breeze. If I did have a complaint, it is that you must have a box of some sort to route your television video through the receiver.

I've had this receiver hooked up to my paradigm monitor 7s for a month now, and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. This was an upgrade from an Onkyo TX-sr504. And the Marantz truly puts the sr504 to shame. Sound quality is excellent, very balanced and neutral sound, bass is smooth and where it should be. Listening to dialogue on the tv finally sounds natural and full, I was having a huge issue with my Onkyo and television dialogue. The onkyo made my center channel sound tiny, like I removed my tv speakers and placed them below my TV (yes I had the receiver set up properly). I used to think it was my center channel, now I realize it was the receiver. My center channel (Paradigm cc190) now sounds rich and more full (its still a smaller speaker). The audyssey setup was a cinch, setting up airplay and connecting the receiver to my home network was simply lug and play, I had to do nothing. The airplay feature is fantastic, I can stream my entire computer's iTunes library and use my iPhone as a remote. And I love the fact that when a song changes, the receiver displays the title or about 20 seconds and then the screen goes blank again, smart touch by Marantz. Distraction free, seamless streaming music! Also has internet radio, which I don't use at all since the quality of music is under 192kbps and sounds awful. The sr5006 sounded great right out of the box, a simple audyssey setup dialed my system nicely.

I'm really not sure why people are complaining about the interface. I found them to be perfectly fine, and easy to navigate. I've owned a NAD receiver that had a horrible interface, the GUI on the marantz is clean, simple and effective.
