Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

If I had a Blu-Ray already in the machine and I turn it on, it would auto start the disc.

So I called Marantz USA, and they never heard of this issue (I think I was one of the first ones who discovered it, or so it seemed).
Larry
I honestly could not tell much difference between the picture quality as both players are excellent.

I had a previous model, UD5005, which I absolutely hated it. It was slow loading the discs, remote control did not appear to be taking charge of the player, frames freeze when watching movies, not impressive sounds, etc. While I do not claim to be an expert, I had a decent set-up with Pioneer Elite SC-55 with Martin Logan speakers so I know it is not the AV receiver or speaker issues. After few months, I switched to Oppo BDP-93 which was a huge step up from the Marantz. All the issues simply disappeared once I traded the player.
About a month ago, I moved and set-up a huge home theater (800 SQ FT) and I purchased a Marantz AV receiver, SR7007, to power up my 7.1 Martin Logan speakers including Descent-i sub, FX surrounds, Motif, Theos which made me "WOW"! The sound was amazingly clear that I REALLY felt like I was in the middle of movies or sitting in the front rows of concerts. I have been a Pioneer and Denon receiver guy but I always wanted to try a Marantz. Now, I am glad I finally had the courage to do so as I am in love with this receiver. While I was in love, I simply came across of reviews of the new UD5007 which surprisingly were mostly positive. I noticed the reviews mainly focused on the improvements made as if Marantz recognized that the previous model was a disaster. At this point, I was tempted to try the new model to see/feel the difference myself now that Marantz has entered my life again.
I pulled the trigger and ordered a UD5007. The player showed up within 3 days and I hurried plugging into the receiver I love. Before the player started the blu-ray disc I loaded, I was immediately impressed with how quickly it swallowed and loaded the menu on the display. I thought Oppo was fast and this new Marantz player was right up there with it, if not faster.

Used purely as universal disk player this unit excels (5 stars on that). My biggest problem though was with completely broken/buggy firmware that had multiple streaming and navigation issues (February 2013 through June 2013) that caused me way too much trouble including warranty unit exchange that solved nothing.

Here is my story of really wanting to own this "technological marvel".

To start with, I would definitely recommend UD5007 as a 3D blu-ray disk player. It works wonders blu-ray and 3D wise. Great video quality, amazing sound quality, extremely quiet, disk loading speed is OK (not too slow but not too fast either). Looks great, has just right set of features.

The issues.

So, my late January 2013 UD5007 worked exceptionally well with blu-ray disks, including 3D ones. Sound and video quality was amazing. Initially, Netflix and Vudu streaming worked fine with maybe a very occasional lockup on Netflix side only.

Then there was a firmware update. Don't we love those? I don't. February 2013 update (if I am not mistaken, but not later than mid March 2013), brought all kinds of streaming and navigation issues that no one including Marantz support knew how to solve.

So I installed the update (silly me). Some time later, I opened VUDU streaming application and suddenly all movie choices were displayed as black empty frames with no movie icons inside. If you are curious, go to VUDU website, click Watch Movies at the top, and imagine that each movie choice is an empty black frame. Yes, just a set of black empty frames - everywhere. One cannot possibly use such screen unless one has a fetish for black empty frames, in which case it works just fine.

This replaced a cheaper brand of Blu-Ray that had quit working. Since I had a modern Marantz stereo receiver (SR4023), I purchased this Marantz unit to match the look of my receiver, and as an upgrade to the DAC and video processing. I was immediately impressed with both the sound and video quality of this unit. It also feels much more substantial than the cheaper blu-ray players.

Listening to CDs and SACDs has been wonderful, and the remote has the basic controls for my receiver built in, so no need to use my receiver remote. I can also tell a notable difference in the video playback of blu-rays on my 46" HDTV -- less fringing and just seems like more overall clarity. As a matter of disclosure, the previous blu-ray player I had was one of the earlier models when the technology was new and was about 1/2 the price of this player, so video processing has likely come a long way in the last few years.

The front panel USB port is great for FLAC and other audio files as well. I have not hooked it up to the network yet, so I can't comment on the YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming functionality, but you can get those things many other places anyway. This was an excellent purchase; money well spent.

I purchased this Marantz DVD player to go with my Marantz Stereo and CD player. Let me tell you that I love all 3 pieces and I highly recommend each component. I have been a huge Marantz fan since the 70's. I only use my DVD player for DVD discs and it plays flawlessly. The picture and sound quality are phenomenal. I can't believe how this machine has even enhanced my movies that are not Blu-Ray. I can't give any comment on the other functions of this machine like using Net Flix since I do not use these them. If you are old school like me and just enjoy playing your own discs you can't beat this DVD Player.
