Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Like a great coach, Henderson helps aspiring marathoners plan their workouts and then shows up each day to monitor their progress and encourage their efforts. This book will be enjoyable and effective for anyone interested in running a successful marathon."

Don Kardong Senior Writer, Runner’s World Fourth Place, 1976 Olympic Marathon

"As marathon training programs go, this one is extraordinary. Henderson has designed a training guide for the regular guy or gal. His combination of objective, technical tips and more subjective daily thoughts creates inspiring lessons in the art of completing a marathon."

Fiona Bayly New York Road Runners Club Organizer of the NYC Marathon

About the Author

Joe Henderson has been writing about running for more than 30 years. He’s not only the West Coast editor and a featured columnist for Runner's World magazine but also the author of more than a dozen books on running, including Better Runs, Long-Run Solution, Fitness Running, and Jog, Run, Race. A veteran runner who has completed more than 40 marathons in his life, Henderson has seen firsthand how the event’s popularity has grown and has played an important role in developing marathon training techniques. He popularized the training method known as "LSD" (long, slow distance) as well as the now common practice of taking walking breaks during marathons.

After receiving his BA from Drake University in 1965, Henderson worked as an editor in the sports department at the Des Moines Register and later as a staff writer for Track & Field News. In 1967 he started his long employment with Runner's World, where he eventually worked his way up to senior editor. In addition, he writes and produces a monthly newsletter called Running Commentary and is an adjunct assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oregon.

Henderson is a former executive director of the International Runners Committee, which was instrumental in placing a women's marathon in the Olympics. His honors include being inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame and receiving the club's journalism award in 1979. He was named a Drake University Distinguished Alumnus in 1981. Henderson lives in Eugene, Oregon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Daily Plan That Works!, May 9, 2000
By
Paul Milligan (High Ridge, Missouri. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Marathon Training: The Proven 100 Day Program for Success (Paperback)
I recieved this book as a gift shortly after committing to run a marathon with the Leukemia Society. I had little background and the idea of running 26.2 miles seemed daunting, at best. After an introduction that gave me the basics and helped make be a believer, I began to follow the schedule. The daily tips were great. I looked forward to writing in the book each night and checking out what was in store for me the next day. The variety of workouts made it a pleasure to follow, and the science seemed sound. Most of all, it worked! I followed the plan again a 2 years later and had a great time at the Disneyworld Marathon. In fact, I'm buying a copy today for my wife, to help her with her first marathon!

3.0 out of 5 stars a daily diary for your training program, June 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Marathon Training: The Proven 100 Day Program for Success (Paperback)
this book was not what I expected. It's not a guide like higdon or galloways' books with example schedules. This book was written to be read page by page for 100 days while recording your progress. Some tips may be useful to some novice runners, the stories were okay.

4.0 out of 5 stars I have successfully run three marathons following this book, December 14, 2000
By A Customer

...and I am working on my fourth. I find the journal format to be very helpful, as well as the weekly workout assignments, articles, tips and recommendations. The three different training plans make this workable for different levels of runners. Although this book might not be ideal for an absolute beginner, it is a good one for the average runner who wants a simple, realistic way to prepare for a marathon without having to turn his or her life over to training.
