Editorial Reviews

Mickey Thomas is one of rock music's best kept secrets. 'Marauder' plunders Thomas Rock legacy with Starship and Elvin Bishop to pay tribute to his musical influences, peers, and followers. Featuring fourteen incredible tracks, 'Marauder' showcases Thomas vocal genius and leaves no doubt that his voice is among rock music most treasured.

'Marauder' is Thomas fitting tribute to his musical influences such as
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Joe Cocker. As lead singer for the popular 80's hitmakers, Starship, Mickey Thomas was the voice of some of the biggest hits of the 80's including
We Built This City, 'Sara' and 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now'. With 'Marauder', Thomas showcases the amazing range of his voice on classics as Paul McCartney's 'Maybe I'm Amazed', AC/DC's 'Moneytalks', Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars', and Muse's 'Supermassive Black Hole' among others.

I love Mickey Thomas' voice and I love his choice of songs for this album. The updated hip hop version of "Life is a Highway" was a nice surprise. I can't believe how amazing his voice still sounds after all these years.

Mickey Thomas is one of the voices of rock for awhile. Whether you know his vocals from the classic Elvin Bishop tune "Fooled Around And Fell in Love" or from "Jane" when he was brought aboard during a then new era of Jefferson Starship, to songs continued with Starship - his is a familiar voice.

When I received this cd I did not know what to expect. Frankly, noticing that it was all (I believe it is all...I am not familiar with only a couple of the tunes) I feared that this would be no more than Mickey with his great voice singing Karaoke, but my fear was unfounded as comparatively this cd is brilliant.

Thomas does not just sings the familiar songs, nor does he out and out change and make them so different to be unrecognizable; instead he does what I have not heard any artist in recent years do with an album of covers; he tailors each one in such a way that makes his voice fit it so well, and does so in a way that makes the song unique from the original, yet it does not deviate from the original so much that you cannot enjoy the song again. Brilliant.

At least one other reviewer on this page goes song by song, so I will not, but what I will point out is one example of the above. The Beatles' song "Rain" is covered here. Frankly, it is one of my least favorite Beatle songs and was the song I least wanted to hear when I looked at the list. Yet Mickey has done what the Beatles could not...I LOVE this version of the song, and as I state in the paragraph above; it is not THAT different, but just enough, Mickey tailors it, owns it and presents a wonderful version. This can be said, in my humble opinion for all of the tracks offered here.

If you are a fan of classic tunes, or of Mickey, Jefferson Starship or Starship - I believe you will love this cd.

I want to start by making one thing clear: Mickey Thomas is one of my all time favourite male rock vocalists and I love his work with Starship.

So, it's with a heavy heart I write this review. This is simly put a terrible album. His voice sounds great, but I don't want to hear an album with covers. The worst song without a doubt is the Hip Hop mix version of "Life is a Highway", closely followed by "Money Talks". No, no and NO. "Hollywood Nights" is the only song i find OK.

I would love to see someone provide him with new melodic rock songs and make an album that makes his great voice justice. Come on Mickey, you can do better than this!

On this set the stellar Mickey Thomas revisits classic hit songs that have inspired him thru the years - keeping current with fantastic versions of songs by Snow Patrol (Chasing Cars)and Muse(Supermassive Black Hole) and going retro with the Tom Cochran hit "Life is a Highway". Mickey shows is amazing range and diversity. It's so great to have new material from one of the most amazing voices in rock and roll. I would highly suggest that any fan of AOR purchase this CD !!!!

Fabulous album! Mickey brings a whole new perspective to some classic songs. The power his voice is still able to generate at the high end is impressive! An ageless rock/blues artist who just seems to keep getting better with time. Great stuff!!
