Book Description

August 1998 Art & Design
An exhibition catalogue of the works of Marc Chagall which includes 70 paintings from all phases of his extensive oeuvre, many of which have remained inaccessible to the general public until now. Thirteeen years after the artist's death works from his private collections, together with loans from museums around the world present a cross-section of the artist's life work. The pictures are artistic celebrations of love and life; aglow with colour, his world lends expression to dreams and desires. People and animals as well as churches and houses from his native town Vitebsk were rich sources of inspiration for Chagall. They are the leitmotif that runs through his work, in their various manifestations they fill the oil paintings, gouaches and watercolors reproduced in this volume. The essays illuminate Chagalls' life and examine the artistic infuences exerted on his work by the Western avant-garde.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Doschka has prepared this exhibition catalog in conjunction with shows at the Stadthalle in Balingen, Germany, and the Salle Saint-George in Liege, Belgium. The main essay nicely describes the "poet-painter," as Chagall is sometimes labeled, and his work, tracing his movement from a small village in White Russia called Vitebsk through his travels in St. Petersburg, Paris, Israel, and New York. Complementary essays are included. Chagall was part of a movement away from the traditional art world toward a more innovative style encompassing symbolist magic, folk-art naivete, and rhythmic line and color. Despite the turbulent times in which he lived, he managed to illuminate the basic events and emotions of life in a transcendent and uplifting fashion. The catalog has a chronological arrangement of nicely reproduced works from Chagall's estate and various private collections, a comprehensive biography with photographs, and a select bibliography. This good, basic introduction to the artist is suitable for public libraries.?Nadine Dalton Speidel, Cuyahoga Cty. P.L., Parma, OH
