Book Description

November 2003
Mainstream media coverage of Pit Bull dogs and the people involved with them is commonly negative and oversimplified so as to focus on dog related violence on humans (including many breeds), and other criminal activity, sometimes drug and gang related. Public opinion in the United States and Europe has been uniformly shaped by this portrayal.
American Pitbull is a photographic exploration into the culture of American Pit Bull dogs and their people, presenting an alternative view of the controversial world revolving around a uniquely American breed of dog and the human beings that live for them.
Over a three-year period photographer Marc Joseph traveled the United States photographing Pit Bull dogs, their owners, breeders and "old time dog men," at their homes and yards, and during various events related to the breed. The relationships formed with his subjects have helped Joseph to gain full access to a culture known by few outside of their specific community.
The fanatical, almost religious devotion that Pit Bull people attribute to their breed is clearly portrayed in Joseph's pictures. Issues of identity are addressed through elements of image, race, pride and background, while the photographs simultaneously serve to further an understanding of our perceptions of unconditional love, beauty, danger and strength. Themes of family and shelter are prominent; throughout the series a cast of characters emerges, themselves defining the context of the book.
From the elder-statesmen of the Pit Bull world in New England and the Southern United States such as Louis B. Colby and Floyd Boudreaux, to new-school giants the Hip-Hop music scene on the East and West coasts, such as Big Boi from Outkast, and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, American Pitbull clearly goes to the heart of what and why people feel so strongly for these dogs.
Writer James Frey A Million Little Pieces( Nan A. Talese / Doubleday) contributes an historically informative and personally sensitive essay, that, along with Marc Joseph's photographs, may well change a few minds on this, most misunderstood of all of man's best friends.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this large, abundantly illustrated volume, Joseph attempts to document the American Pitbull Terrier as owned throughout the country. What emerges, however, is a single-sided, often stereotypical view of the pitbull owners themselves—a portrait that is nevertheless evocatively captured. The opening two-page spread shows a close up of a young man from Liberty, Tex., proudly baring his gold teeth and his pitbull ring; an American flag hangs above him. Subsequent photos show pitbulls tied up in back yards or being held by their tattooed owners (men and women; black, white and Latino). Joseph offers a glimpse into an East Village apartment in New York City, then turns his attention to a hangar where pitbull brick-pulling competitions are held. Only in Frey’s essay, which narrates the author’s search for a pitbull pup, does the stereotypical view of pitbulls as ferocious and strong begin to be challenged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing...but maybe that's the point, June 4, 2005
By
This review is from: Marc Joseph: American Pitbull (Hardcover)
I agree and disagree with nearly everything written about this book. The photos are gorgeous, more beautiful than some of the people in the book deserve. But I'm not sure it is a disservice to the dogs. The dogs pictured in the book are truly beautiful, particularly when they are photographed on their own, outside of the world of people who value them only for the breed stereotype. Beautiful dogs, Ugly world.

Of course, there are two sides of the pit bull world that are ignored: fighting, which is hideous, and the family pit bull, who lives peacefully among its human brothers and sisters. Perhaps someone else will do that book justice.

Also of note, James Frey, who contributes an essay here about his soul mate, a pit bull named Bella. Bella was actually brought home as a mate for his male pit Cassius, who had to be put to sleep because he was from the fighting bloodline. (He tells this story and more in My Friend Leonard, his new book.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos, but extremely one-sided, December 21, 2005
This review is from: Marc Joseph: American Pitbull (Hardcover)
Like the others, I was extremely excited about this book. As an APBT owner and an amature photographer, I couldn't wait to look through it. When I finally did I was SO angered that that the only thing that was portrayed in this book was the very thing I've worked so hard as an owner to fight against. Where were the family dogs, the owners who actually treated their dogs with with love and as family members, not as extensions of their genetals? Like any good essay, whether written or photographic, it should provide the reader/viewer with something new, unique, creative, etc. There was nothing new, creative or unique about these stereotypical immages of a pit bull. While the images were beautiful, as images, the only thing this book does is continue to enforce the very common misconception of a wonderful, family dog.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately We Are Robbed Again..., April 13, 2005
This review is from: Marc Joseph: American Pitbull (Hardcover)
...of the dignity of the idea that we own the most beautiful canines in the world. I was so very excited to see this book on the internet. I purchased it with a gift card, and had it mailed to my home. Imagaine my dismay when I received the book and opened it up to find photographs of dogs in cages, beside trophies, and men with big gold rings on their fingers! Where are the precious pits that I know and love?

I think you tried, but missed the mark. I mean WAY missed the mark. This book is not for true fans of the pit bull--just people who think the dogs only position in life is to entertain their owners.
