Book Description

October 28, 2011
This book is a unique, abstract portrait of former ATP #1 ranked tennis player Marcelo Rios of Chile from various sources and perspectives, including opponents, friends, media, fans, photographers, his coaches, industry people, tournament officials, etc. Rios possessed the wondrous talent which could have won ten Grand Slams - according to Marat Safin, and a maverick personality which fascinated, bewildered and awed the tennis world from 1994 to 2003. In this book you will learn many insights and anecdotes about Rios and his unparalleled experience on the professional tennis circuit, such as the time he punched out a fan at a Miami restaurant, the time a woman left his hotel room screaming, how his spectacular skills could make even a top ten player feel like a novice on the court. All hardcore tennis fans will greatly enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite must for tennis fans! November 15, 2011

I really admired Marcelo Rios' tennis when he played in the 1990s. He was a fantastic talent and is often called the most talented player never to win a grand slam. He was also a bit of an enigma, with a so-called `bad boy' reputation. This is an insightful and fascinating book by Scoop Malinowski who is a respected tennis journalist. It's not a straight-forward biography of Marcelo Rios - it's a selection of interviews and quotes from tennis greats such as Mats Wilander and Thomas Johannson, players who played alongside Rios such as Michael Joyce, M Gambil, Luke Jensen, Michael Chang, respected coaches such as Nick Bollitieri and Bob Brett, and tournament officials, workers and those involved in the commercial side of the game. There are also interviews/quotes from fans and their encounters with Rios. It's a fascinating read, discussing the technical side of the Rios game as well as trying to find out what made him tick - was he a social misfit? Shy? Misunderstood? Or did he really not just care? A definite must for tennis fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the book August 27, 2012
Good book, not great. But I was pleasantly surprised by this book about Marcelo Rios as it contains a lot of interesting and little known content. It got some pretty good reviews in the tennis world and it lived up to expectations. It's quite a different kind of book, constructed in an interesting, unpredictable freeflow way. Rios certainly was a fascinating, enigmatic figure and this book about him captures his essence and gives you over 300 pages of info. One thing I wish the author pursued more was how did Rios, as an undersized child, excel so much in tennis, how did he become so good so fast? What kind of coaching did he receive in his formative years? After reading the book the reader still doesn't know. There is just not a lot of input from his early years in Chile, I think there should have been more. But the overall strength of the book is that there are a LOT of varied perspectives and views of Marcelo Rios collected from the tennis world which are sometimes hilarious, strange, cool and just pure fascinating. Hardcore tennis fans who remember Rios as a player will enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat repetitive anecdotes. May 16, 2013

The entire book is just a compendium of what other players thought of him . After a while it becomes somewhat monotonous!
