5.0 out of 5 stars March or Die, February 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: March or Die (Fifth Foreign Legion, 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a superb book. I've read this at least 4 times. The story-line was riveting. A military force 1,500 kilometers behind enemy lines and surrounded on all sides. Although they had a technological edge in weaponry, it was their spirit and determination that won the day. As the Foreign Legion's motto said, "If you stand, then stand with courage. If you die, do it with honor!" The only regret that I have is that there is only 3 novels in this series. I hope the author writes more!

5.0 out of 5 stars FROM BACK COVER, April 19, 2008

WHEN THE CONQUERED REVOLT

As the Terran Commonwealth expanded the borders of the interstellar territories it controlled, an alien race which had once ruled the spaceways was forced to yield control of much of their own star empire. But they had never been fully conquered, and they would never cease trying to undermine the Commonwealth's power.

So when Commonwealth diplomats and the command officers of the Terran Fifth Foreign Legion gathered in the capital city of the world to meet with local ruler, no one suspected the trap they were walking ino. Even as assassins' fire claimed their lives, native forces initiated a simultaneous attack on the partially completed Fifth Foreign legion fortress. And the ranking surviving officer at the fort led his troops on an impossible march through the heart of the enemy territory, fighting every step of the way in a last-ditch effort to reach their main base - or die in the attempt.

The existing 5-star ratings and short review significantly overrate this story. This is a tale of a futuristic Foreign Legion that is stationed on a distant planet. The natives, relatively primitive compared to high-tech legionnaires, decide to revolt. Many of the legionnaires are massacred in the initial onslaught, many others are surrounded and cut off. The legionnaires have a huge advantage in firepower and discipline, but there are hordes of natives with relatively low-tech, but nonetheless lethal, weapons and it is an all out fight to the finish. This tale follows one company of the legionnaires as they initially defend their camp, then decide to make a perilous march back to the friendly lines. On the way they fight several battles with the natives, pick up some other legionnaires, ultimately to be trapped in a narrow valley just before reaching their destination. If you want to see if they make it out, read the book.

There is a lot to like about this book, and it is written better than most military sci-fi that I've read. The world and the natives are well thought out and complex. The author obviously knows a great deal about the history and traditions of the real French Foreign Legion, these are woven into the story. Much of the military hardware used by the future soldiers is well thought out and at least believable. The underlying theme of the story (do the main characters have what it takes to be a legionnaire, are they capable, etc.) is pretty simplistic though. The plot is fairly predictable and you can pretty much guess how it is going to end. Definitely worth a look if you like this genre, but not 5 stars worth (no way this is like Starship Troopers - not on the same planet).
