I'm 18 years old and I never read romance novels until I found some Grace Livingston Hill books that my mom bought. Marcia Schuyler was the first I read... I guess the picture caught my eye. I started reading it, and I could NOT put it down!!! I was laughing about it with my brother, telling him, "I'm actually gonna go read a romance novel now. I'll let you know how it is!" but I LOVED it!! The story was so captivating! I read the whole book, all 300 and some pages worth, in one night!!! *laughs* Since then, I have gotten alot of the other books and have really enjoyed my time reading them. Still, "Marcia Schuyler" is my FAVORITE!! I've read it 2 times, and it's also my mom's favorite. Grace Livingston Hill really captured a unique story with this one, a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out what happens next. I think it is so sweet how the two main characters finally realize how much they love each other in the end.
If you want a sweet, clean, wholesome novel, I highly suggest reading this one!! I've even given it as gifts to my friends. :)

Grace Livingston Hill was my idol. I had been reading lurid, sexy books and then, I became a Christian. Then I realized these were not the healthiest books to read for

a young Christian trying to grow in Christ. I, then, read 89 of Grace's books. I scoured the stores for more until there were no more to be had. That's when I decided wholesome romance books were in demand but in short supply. Grace's books were my greatest inspiration and what encouraged me to write Christian Romance myself.

Still, many years later, I'm still (sign) hoping to come across a title of hers I may have missed.

The first GLH I read, and still the best IMHO. Marcia steps into the breach when her hoyden older sister jilts her groom at the altar. Leaving her home to take up residence with her new husband, she's subject to the difficulties of loving a man who has accepted her as second best, plus the machinations of the sister, who is outraged that young Marcia would presume to "take up with my David."

While I have to admit that I don't care for Grace Livingston Hill's making Miranda speak in a somewhat illiterate style, it's true that she probably wouldn't have had the best vocabulary and grammar around. Still, I get tired of seeing "mountain" pronounced as "mounting". But, that said, I can whole-heartedly recommend this book. As nearly everyone mentions, it's the third in a series that Grace wrote, starting with "Marcia Schyler". This book came after "Phoebe Deane" and wound up the series. I've always thought it was the best of the three. A large part of it is based on actual history (which is true of the other two as well) and it tells of missionaries helping the indians and being caught up in an uprising. This book takes place a lot earlier in time than most of Hill's book (I believe it's in the late 1840's) like the first two in the series, and so they have a different tone from most of Hill's work. If you like Christian fiction with a slightly historical slant, give it a read.

This book is written in a little bit different style than most of Hill's books. I enjoyed it tremendously. Miranda is an out-spoken and kind hearted woman who has been waiting for love it seems all her life. When she encounters a neighbor's son, he reminds her of his older half-brother, Alan. Because Miranda had loved Alan for years, she helps out his younger brother, especially since his father marries for the 3rd time!

Marcia has always lived in the shadow of her beautiful and outgoing sister. When Marcia's sister runs off only a little while before her wedding, Marcia finds herself comforting the jilted groom...and before she knows it finds herself his bride! But though Marcia finds herself falling in love with her new husband, David, he cannot seem to get over her sister. Marcia thinks that she can live with this until her sister finds her way back into their lives...and she wants David back.
I would tell you more, but it has been awhile since I read this book and besides, I would not want to ruin it for anyone. But it's worth a look for anyone who likes historical christian romance and Grace Livingston Hill.

This was the first Grace Livingston Hill I read. by now I have read at least 15. It was a great book, I stayed up until 1:30 reading it! I was actually named after it. This is one the best books I've read. It's in my top 5. It about Miranda Griscom, who has been asked to be the 3rd wive of a man she could never love. The man she does love is one of his sons who was accused of murder 12 years before. She becomes good friends with his younger brother, and clears her lover's name. but how is she going to tell him that it's safe for him to come home when she has no idea of his whereabouts. Will she ever see him again? this is a great book, and I really enjoyed it.

I used to read these as a young adult and now, in my sixites, I started re-reading Grace Livingston Hill. I am not a "born again" Christian but I love these old novels for their sense of history, for a culture and values not-outdated today, in spite of what people would like to believe. Also in this book the heroine goes with her husband to see a demonstration of a "new technology", a steam engine railroad. So many of the attitudes expressed are so similar to what people put forth today when confronted with a radical new thing, fear, awe, disbelief that it could be useful, to people with vision who say, we don't know how this will play out, but WOW let's explore it. God had a way of handing us knowledge we aren't quite ready to embrace, but He knows we cannot grow spiritually without. Lots of lessons in GLH's novel that are so applicable today.
