Product Description

The Marcy Classic Mid-size Bench is the perfect bench for both beginners and advanced users. It's great gear for a lifetime of body sculpting. 2-piece construction allows for walk-in squat.

Tough, versatile, and comfortable, the Marcy MD 859 mid-size weight bench is geared for a lifetime of body sculpting. The device is equipped with heavy-duty 3-inch-round steel uprights to hold the weight bar, with a 40-inch crutch width that accommodates both 6-foot and 7-foot bars. To ensure safety during walk-in squats and bench presses, the MD 859 also includes oversized bar catches to safely catch or cradle the bar. The unit's main attraction is its multi-position workout bench, which adjusts to decline, incline, flat, and military press positions. That's not the unit's only workout station, however, as the unit also includes a dual-action leg developer with six oversized roller pads, along with an integrated arm curl pad. The pivot point on the leg developer is ideally placed for correct joint alignment.

Other features include an adjustable pop-pin tightening feature; sturdy no-tip front and rear stabilizers; deluxe high-density boxed upholstery; and a durable powder-coated finish. Suitable for both beginning and advanced users, the unit measures 63 by 51 by 43 inches (W x H x D) and carries a two-year limited warranty on parts.

I ordered this because I wanted/needed a separate bench and rack. I'm happy with that aspect, the bench and rack are well made and were very easy to assemble with clear instructions. A previous reviewer mentioned the incline 'hooks' under the back felt loose, but I don't find that on mine. Once assembled and tightened it was solid and comfortable with no wiggle at all and felt quite secure. Whether it will loosen over time only time will tell. Overall I found the whole setup to be reasonably well made and I'm almost completely happy with it.

PRO'S: The long bench fits me well at 6'+, also the rack is tall enough when extended to permit me an almost level take off for squats, easy on, easy off. The leg raise/curl unit works well. I haven't tried the preacher curl as yet, But then I'm not likely to as the leg machine is in the way (see 'cons').

CONS: 1st: ( Listen up Impex!! ) This is not advertised as an "olympic" bench, but does come with a plastic sleeve and 2 inch clamp on the leg machine accommodate olympic plates. What it does NOT come with is a one inch spring clamp to hold standard weight plates on the steel shaft of the leg machine. I had to buy a pair separately, which is a waste considering only one will ever be used. C'mon Impex, you saved saved yourself a few cents by not including a single one inchclamp in an otherwise decent package!

2nd: The leg machine is okay, but it's a PITA having it hanging there (in the way) when you want to use the preacher pad or if you want to use the incline bench just as a bench! It wouldn't have taken a lot of effort or planning to set this up so that the end of the bench could be bare, and then either the leg machine OR the preacher pad being made to drop into the pipe as the preacher pad does now.

The price was right at $163 and with free shipping it surpasses many others I have seen or used. Put it together in about an hour but it helps to have your own tools. Instructions were relatively easy to follow and all the parts and pieces were in the box. Only a couple of drawbacks I've noticed while using the bench....the preacher curl attachment is not very stable, has a wobble to it and the quad extension gets in the way and won't allow you to fully extend your bar to get the max benefit from your curls. The quad extension end of the bench needs to have a horizontal stabilizing bar or brace like the rear part of the bench. The bench will tip to one side if too much of your body weight and weights lean to one side. Overall this is a good buy for the money and I enjoy using the bench and would recommend it. It is also a great feature to have the squat rack separate from the bench.

While I agree with the complaints about this set's limitations, I have to point out what it does well. I've had this for a month, it took me about 4 hours to put together by myself over the course of a weekend, and have used it with a personal trainer since then. This is NOT a bench for a serious power-lifter. While it states on the bench that the unit can handle up to 600 lbs keep in mind that this figure includes the weight of the person on the bench. Anyone looking to replicate a gym experience at home with Olympic weights will be disappointed.
That said, for what it is and what it does, the bang for the buck is terrific. The unit fits neatly on a 4'x6' rubber mat (not included but definitely recommended) and because the bench is separate from the rack, can easily be lined up against a wall and out of the way. I've used the unit to bench press over 200 lbs without fear of the unit overturning; for heavier weight I placed dumbbells or plates on the base for added stability. This is particularly useful when using the leg apparatus, as others have pointed out that heavy weight can raise the other end of the bench (though I haven't experienced that yet). It also fits in my basement which has 7' ceilings, whereas most squat racks are 8'+.
In short, if you're a middle-aged working parent who has to fit workouts in at all hours of the day, the convenience, versatility, and utility of this piece of gear makes it a tremendous bargain for what it cost.

UPDATED REVIEW: I just wanted to add a caveat since time has passed. I still rate this 5 out of 5 stars as it fills a niche and is designed well.

As with many who do strength training, I grew out of this. Eventually, you are going to need a power rack with safety bars for squats and benches. You will gradually get to a point where, without a spotter, you will need safeties.

If your ultimate goal is to maintain a level of fitness that includes squatting, this will be very good. However, if your goal is to strength train, just get a power rack.

I ended up purchasing a power rack, sold the squat rack apparatus on CL, and kept the bench. It worked out well.

The only two things that were drawbacks for me were a) the bench, like a lot out there, do not go up to 90 degrees. Close to upright, just not quite; b) the preacher curl attachment is very wobbly, although I do not utilize it.

My experience with the squat rack while I had it was good. I can understand the comments regarding it being wobbly, but it was a non-issue for me performance-wise.

Most importantly, I was looking for a solution for squats. Beginner benches do not have extending arms. Those that do often do not extend vertically high enough for squats. Most squat racks' horizontal distance are at least 48", which excludes the use of my 6' bar. Did not want to invest more $ in a 7' bar. Even the squat racks w/out a cross bar that are two separate peices go for upwards of $150. I was able to purchase this, with the nice bench included, for around the same price.

So, if you would like a bench that does not require a 7' bar and will accommodate squats, get this. It solved my problems.
