Fess Rules, September 28, 2000
This review is from: Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge (Audio CD)
Although this CD has some overlap with other 'fess CDs it is still worth a listen plus you get several classics not found elsewhere. Seems like the good Professor had about a dozen standards and it seems like at 6 of the them show up on every CD. This CD revolves around the standards that substained him through the lean years. Not a bad choice for the first time listener, although Gumbo and Crawfish Fiesta are my personal favorites. The sound quality of every track is outstanding. I am very impressed with all of the Rhino CD's on that point. This is a real studio album and the sound quality reflects that. I highly recommend this CD.

A Legend in New Orleans; See Why!, April 13, 2009
This review is from: Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge (Audio CD)
They broke the mold after Professor Longhair. Incredible and irrepressible blend of Blues and early Rock and Roll with some Funk, Boogie, old-time Jazz and Caribbean rhythm thrown in as lagnappe. Professor Longhair was a mentor to Dr. John, James Booker, Fats Domino and many other fabulous New Orleans musicians. His importance is clear when you notice how often others cite his influence in their music and their lives. This album has a place of honor on of my "Top 25," a list that ranges from CCR to Gershwin, and from Johnny Rivers to Rimsky-Korsakov. I have four of his albums; this is the best of those. Join the elite who can truly appreciate the virtues of "Tipitina," "Rum and Coca Cola" and "Her Mind is Gone." Whether you want to dance, sing along or just groove, you'll soon be on a quest for more Professor Longhair - guaranteed.

Good Crawfish Boil Music, June 25, 2000
This review is from: Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge (Audio CD)
This is a great CD to play at a cookout or crawfish boil; mostly high-energy 'Fess tunes, all with a beat you can step to. Kind of a 'greatest hits' albulm. You can't lay down and die before you've heard 'Jambalaya', lest you want to live eternity in regret.
