5.0 out of 5 stars Put this on and start your gumbo!, July 4, 2000
By
This review is from: Mardi Gras in New Orleans 1 (Audio CD)
This is a 'meal-in-a-dish' compilation of Mardi Gras classics. A must-have to get you in the Carnival mood, even if it's August. The Wild Magnolia's 'New Suit' is such a classic that I'd own this CD for it alone. I have it on vinyl, made a couple cassettes, and gotta have a CD copy of it. And Al Johnson's 'Carnival Time' is one of those tunes that, when you hear it on the radio here in NO, you know it's Carnival season, even if you haven't got your first King Cake yet! Full of Mardi Gras musical staples, get this delectable disc, pop it in your CD player, tap a keg and start second linin'!

Great song selection and placement.
One problem, it's only 36 minutes long.

Bought the CD at the Mardi Gras museum in the Presbytere. It was playing in there. It's on my ipod now and I am giving the CD to my nephew and hoping his excellent high school marching or jazz band will try some of these. I have collected 9 other N.O. CDs and this is the most fun. Can't stop smiling when its playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classics, But Not Enough Of 'Em, February 21, 2009
This review is from: Mardi Gras in New Orleans 1 (Audio CD)
Here are some Mardi Gras classics, but not enough of them; it's way too short. After moving away from my home town New Orleans, I bought this on cassette at the N.O. airport after a visit years ago - just to cure some homesick blues. The lack of liner notes & credits was frustrating, given the number of times these same songs have been covered by many artists, but I loved it from the start.

How can you go wrong with Professor Longhair, the Wild Magnolias, Earl King, Al Johnson's "Carnival Time," plus the simple but quintessential march-behind-the-parade "Second Line" parts 1 & 2 from Stop Incorporated?

I've since filled the gaps with other Carnival classics & vintage recordings from the 50's-70's era of New Orleans's local studios' golden years in early rock'n'roll & soul music, but this collection still has the essence of the Mardi Gras Indian tradition & is a good starting point for getting in the Carnival mood.

Other current artists keep the same spirit alive, but these & other early classics will be heard every year at Carnival time, I guar-an-tee!

This is it!--THE quintessential Mardi Gras collection. Here, you will find all of those tunes you are humming after every Mardi Gras parade. Other collections are good, but not as good. Start with this one and branch out, but definitely start with this one.

always loved the black indians and now it is particularly poignant that the spirit is there but the physical environment is so damaged. This is a good sampling of the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars THROW ME SOMETHING, MISTER!!!!, February 11, 2002
This review is from: Mardi Gras in New Orleans 1 (Audio CD)
I'm a New Orleans native, and this CD has the particular versions of these classics that everyone in New Orleans recognizes from the very first note. 'Big Chief, Part 2' is my all time favorite Mardi Gras song, and this is CD has my favorite recording of it. This is definitely THE CD to have if you want to get in the spirit.
If you're looking to find more New Orleans style music, let me suggest the songs 'It Ain't My Fault' and 'Do Whatcha Wanna' as recorded by the Rebirth Brass Band.
