Gr. 4-6. This vibrantly illustrated collection of 24 creation stories from around the world opens on an intriguing note with Genesis and the apocalyptic vision of St. John and ends in similar fashion with the Norse tales of how the world began and the fall of the gods. In between there are myths from ancient civilizations as well as yarns from such indigenous peoples as the Dogon of Mali and the Dyaks of Borneo. Matthews uses a fairly simple style to increase the accessibility of these complex creation tales; most have a reverent tone, yet a few are also funny. The biographical dictionary is a welcome device, but pronunciation guides are missing. And even though Matthews states, "I hope I have stayed true to the spirit of the originals," he doesn't offer any documentation. This has the look and feel of a gift book, yet librarians and teachers should also find it appealing. The book's comparative approach makes it ideal for developing students' critical thinking skills.
