Paolo Fresu (trumpet - Italy), Richard Galliano (accordion and bandoneon -France) and Jan Lundgren (piano - Sweden) have collaborated for a very sentimental album that can win everybody's heart easily. Fresu's style is somewhere between Chet Baker and Enrico Rava (not as sophisticated as Rava). His "mediterranean touch" is so strong. He generally prefers muted solos to create this effect. Galliano is the top player for accardion and Lundgren presents a perfect base for their solos. Eleven of songs are original compositons, other's from Jobim, Ravel and Trenet. That's a perfect combination altogether. And for me, as a Turkish listener, 12th cut, "Mio Mehmet, forse il destino m'impedira di rivederti" is a real surprise. Because, Fresu's inspiration in this compositon is Nazim Hikmet. Thanks to the universal language of his poetry and Mr. Fresu's in-depth knowledge and sensitivity...

The contemplation of beauty and melancholy. An album where Lundgren's piano, Fresu's trumpet and flugelhorn and Galliano's accordion and bandoneon are immersed in a calm sea, just lapped by a light mistral at sunset.
The choice to avoid rhythmic instruments (there are no drums and bass in the album) makes this music timeless, ethereal, sweet and melancholy, as an emotion that is part of us and accompanies us throughout life . A taste, a smell, an emotion. A precious piece of art for lovers of good music, not an album for lovers of technical jazz. This is the highest honor of the album: the lack of cultural barriers and technicalities which would require a jazz background to be able to appreciate it, although they are indeed three great jazz players.

Even though this music is dark and brooding much of the time, still it manages to soar. The performances are, as one would expect of this trio, filled with heart and enough technical panache to please most jazzophiles. The recording quality is superb. I only wish I could purchase the DVD of this live performance.

I have long been a fan of Richard Galliano, but for some reason had never heard neither of Paolo Fresu nor of Jan Lundgren. And were it not for YouTube, I may never have come across Mare Nostrum. I was recently posting a Richard Galliano cut to facebook from YouTube and noticed on the sidebar that someone had posted this to YouTube in it's entirety. So I listened, liked, and bought.
Mare Nostrum is a very pleasant album that draws it's vibe from the musical heritages of the three musicians, two from the Mediterranean area and one from Scandinavia. It mostly works very well as no one dominates and all are able to demonstrate their virtuosity and their compatibility. My favorites are the title cut, Principessa, the Seagull, Chat Pitre, Valzer del Ritorno, and Para Jobim. There is a pleasing mix of moods and styles, so the listener should never be bored.
The CD comes with an attractive booklet that explains the project and introduces the listener to each of the musicians, gives minimal but sufficient information on the music, and offers a few photos of the musicians. I like Mare Nostrum well enough to make me want to hear more of Lundgren and Fresu. It may be a journey to a new musical realm. Let's see how that works out!

This is a marvelous recording. Beautiful, lyrical music with improvisations by bandoneon, trumpet or flugelhorn and piano. These are some of Europe's greatest jazz inspired musicians at the top of the form. The music is not traditional jazz, but very fluid and melodic. Perhaps my favorite recent musical purchase.
