Book Description

September 29, 2006

In Maremma, a desolate, pestilential wasteland on the Tuscan coast, the beautiful young orphan Musa, daughter of the infamous bandit Saturnino, lives with her adoptive mother Joconda. But when Joconda dies, Musa is left alone to live in the ruins of an ancient Etruscan tomb. Several men will try to marry and tame her, but Musa remains defiantly independent...until she discovers for the first time the passion of real love - with tragic results.

First published in 1882 at the height of Ouida's popularity, In Maremma was one of Ouida's most popular novels after Under Two Flags (1867) and Moths (1880). A mixture of modern female Gothic and an important meditation on women's role in nineteenth century society, In Maremma remains as vital and moving as when it was first published. This edition includes a new introduction and notes by one of the world's foremost Ouida scholars, Natalie Schroeder, as well as the text of contemporary reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ouida, Victorian Scandal Girl, September 24, 2007
This review is from: In Maremma (Valancourt Classics) (Paperback)
If you are a lover of those "big, baggy monsters" also known as the Victorian Novel, you're in for a treat. Ouida, a great literary success in her time, is not much read or taught these days. But this novel is tragic, beautiful, and positively uncanny. If you love Emily Bronte, this novel is for you. Anyone who frequently teaches 19th century fiction, as I do, would do well to switch out a more well known novel from the syllabus, and include _In Maremma_ instead, for a change of pace.

This particular edition is extremely well edited, and accurate and succinct footnotes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Hasn't This Been Filmed?, September 21, 2007
This review is from: In Maremma (Valancourt Classics) (Paperback)
In Maremma is just waiting to be discovered by a film director. The novel is dark, haunting, and beautiful, full of descriptions of the plant and animal life of coastal Italy. But what a sad work. Once you have met Musa, you will never forget her. If you enjoy Tess of the D'Urbevilles, then you must read In Maremma.
