Hassle Free Comfort, November 12, 2011
This review is from: Mares Kaila MRS Plus Womens Scuba BC (Misc.)
Don't be put off by the marketing drivel they use for this BCD. I dived every weekend for just over a year with rental BCs before I eventually decided to buy one, so I'd had a lot of experience with a variety of BCs in a range of qualities and conditions. I admit I did not buy my BCD from Amazon, but am purchasing a new set of weight pockets as I lost one on a dive due to fumble fingers, no fault of the BCD.
At 5'4" and 135lbs (when I bought it), I found I needed an XS, but it fit perfectly and I was comfortable from virtually the first dive. Since then, I've put on a bit of weight (now 154lbs) and it still fits with complete comfort, some 100-odd dives later. The air pockets are both front and back, so I have great buoyancy underwater, and don't end up face down when I'm on the surface. A big deal for me; I hate getting water in my face, especially salt water. For an avid diver, I'm not at all friendly with H2O.
The integrated weight pockets take some getting used to, if you've never used them before. They're relatively simple to use, but the clips are quite strong and you may need to learn the "trick" for easy release. I'm actually quite grateful for this feature, because I've seen other divers lose a pocket whilst underwater and that would seriously annoy me. They have velcro pocket inners, so you can adjust for more or fewer weights, as you need.
My only complaint with this BCD is the size of the pockets (not the weight pockets, the BCD pockets). Not only are they rather small, they are difficult to access. In fact, compared to my husband's Mares BCD (although he is admittedly twice my size and uses an XL Mares), my pockets are almost inaccessible. Usually, he digs in them for whatever it is I require.
However, this minor inconvenience is offset by the plentiful D-rings that come with this device. I've added some clips and can attach most things very comfortably to the outside; my octo, my gauges, a whistle, ID tags, etc. No worries about your profile, I've been complimented several times on how neat I am underwater (no arrogance, I'm just giving information). Everything tucks in very well.
Operationally speaking, the BCD is simple to inflate and deflate, with the relevant buttons on the hose being easily available and intuitive. There are two deflaters, one on the shoulder and one on the rear. The shoulder buckles are both quick-release, and the straps can be tightened or released to fit your torso. I'm a curvy girl, and the chest clip fits snugly above my D-sized girls without flattening or discomfort. There is an adjustable velcro cumberband, with a clip-in strap over it. I find these straps a little short, I need to pull the straps tighter than they allow, but the cumberband is as snug as I require.
The replacement weight pockets are available here on Amazon, as I have discovered, and I believe you can also find them on eBay.
Overall, then, the Kaila BCD receives 5 stars from this reviewer.
