Mead's unconventional life is depicted in an accurate and readable manner in this balanced portrayal of her personal life and career. The book's major flaw is the lack of maps showing where Mead's field studies were conducted. The Epsteins' She Never Looked Back: Margaret Mead in Samoa (Coward, 1980; o.p.) focuses on a specific aspect of her career and is for a younger audience; Church's Margaret Mead: Student of the Global Village (Greenhaven, 1976; o.p.) and Jacqueline Ludle's Margaret Mead (Watts, 1983) are comparable in terms of readability, accuracy, and photographic illustration. Only the Ludle book includes maps of Mead's travels. A useful source for school reports and a worthwhile purchase for libraries, especially those that have a special interest in women's history or in feminist studies. --April L.
